If You Can’t Stop ‘Em, Might As Well Join ‘Em

Summary:

Newly knighted Anakin Skywalker is given command of the 501st Legion. Captain Rex is promoted to Anakin’s right hand man. He’s woefully unprepared for the human tornado that is Skywalker, but he is very prepared to acquire a lot of new baby brothers.

Chapter 1: Welcome to the 501st

Chapter Text

Obi-wan’s lightsaber flicked across Anakin’s padawan braid. It fell to the floor of the Council chamber. It felt strange to Anakin to not have it brushing against his neck, but he was thrilled. He was finally a Knight, and a general, and maybe a hero in this war.

“Rise, Knight Skywalker,” Master Windu said.

The Council smiled as he rose and exited the chamber, Obi-wan following close behind.

“Congratulations, Anakin,” he smiled, “I look forward to serving with you as a General.”

”Where do you think I’ll be assigned?” Anakin bounced on the balls of his feet.

”Already ready for a fight,” Obi-wan sighed, “You’ll likely be assigned under the 212th, so we‘ll see a lot of each other.”

”If I’m with the 212th, can I have Rex?”

”I’m sure we can work something out,” Obi-wan stroked his beard, “But you’re filing the data work.”

Rex’s shuttle descended to the landing platform outside the GAR barracks. The complex was huge, but the city was even bigger. The buildings never seemed to stop and compared to Geonosis, it felt claustrophobic. Tipoca City hadn’t prepared him for this.

Cody was waiting for him on the platform. He hadn’t been on Geonosis, as most of the Marshal Commanders had been supervising the operation from the GAR headquarters. Which meant Rex finally had something cool to tell Cody about.

”Hey Cody!” He practically ran out onto the platform to his ori’vod.

”Hi, Rex,” Cody grinned, pulling his vod’ika into a hug, “How was Geonosis?”

”Oh, so it was crazy, like it was so hot and dusty, and there were these bugs everywhere, and I wish you could have been there because it would have been epic.”

”Slow down, we have two weeks of leave, you can tell me all about it,” Cody smiled, ruffling Rex’s hair, “And the rest of the batch is on leave too, so you can tell everybody about it.”

”There were just droids everywhere!” Ponds said.

”Well, it was a droid factory, what did you expect?” Rex punched his arm.

”They said the factory was only operating at 45% capacity! There were so many droids!”

”But then these giant battle spheres started rising out of the grounds, and they brought them down with the RX-200s, and that sent dust flying up everywhere. You couldn’t see a foot in front of your face.”

Rex’s datapad chimed from across the room. He looked at it, then turned the tooka eyes on Neyo, who was closest to the desk.

”Can you grab that for me, please?”

Neyo looked at him and sighed, then reached across the desk for the ‘pad. He looked at the notification, then smirked at Rex and passed the ‘pad to Bacara.

“What is this? It’s my ‘pad,” Rex gestured at the ‘pad, which was now making its rounds around the room.

“If you wanted to see it, you shouldn’t have asked me to get it for you,” Neyo shrugged.

Bly had passed it to Cody, when another notification pinged. Cody made a face, then passed it to Keeli. Another ping.

Keeli finally tossed it to Rex.

”Cody, what is that face for?”

”You’ll see.”

Notification: Priority

  • CT-7567 will receive the Bronze Star for bravery at the Battle of Geonosis

Notification: High Priority

  • CT-7567 has been reassigned to the command of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker

“Skywalker? General Kenobi’s trainee? When did he become a General?” Rex looked at Cody, who shrugged.

”Why do you ask?” Bly said.

”He’s my general now,” Rex shrugged.

”Isn’t he kind of crazy?” Wolffe asked.

”That’s what General Windu said,” Ponds looked pityingly at Rex, “Good luck, vod’ika.”

Notification: High Priority

  • CT-7567 will be given command of the 501st legion

His datapad chimed one more time.

Notification: High Priority

  • Troop roster for the 501st legion: 2 regiments available, 2 regiments to be assigned from Kamino

“So?” Bacara looked at him.

”What?” Rex frowned at the roster.

”What are the rest of these notifications about? I only saw the first one. Congratulations, by the way.”

”Reassigned to the command of General Skywalker, they’re giving me a legion, but I’m not a commander, and apparently half of my new legion didn’t make it off of Geonosis. We’re getting two shiny regiments from Kamino.”

”Good luck with that,” Bacara said.

”Almost everyone is getting shinies off of Kamino, we took heavy losses at Geonosis,” Ponds said, leaning back in his chair, “I’d worry more about Skywalker.”

”Thank you Ponds,” Rex grimaced, “That’s so reassuring.

He turned to Cody, “Do you think they’ll promote me if they’re giving me a legion?”

“Maybe,” Cody shrugged, “I guess it depends on whether or not you get a kih’jetii.”

”Skywalker just became a jetii, why would they give him a kih’jetii?” Jet asked.

”Especially if Skywalker is as crazy as you all are saying,” Blackout added, “I wouldn’t want him training a kih’jetii.”

The ‘pad pinged again. Cody’s did too.

Notification: High Priority

  • General Kenobi, 212th Attack Battalion; General Skywalker, 501st Legion: Status - DEPLOYED TO CHRISTOPHSIS, DEPARTURE IN TWO STANDARD ROTATIONS

“What happened to two weeks of leave?” Rex sighed.

“Well, Rex, I guess you’re about to find out just how crazy Skywalker really is,” Cody grinned, “And I’m finally gonna see some real action!”
