Peter had decided to become irritating on purpose, and the pleased spark in his expression suggested he knew exactly how much she was enjoying it.
“Dance-off.”
Jean’s eyes lifted slowly from the page.
“No.”
“Scared?”
“No.”
“That’s usually what people say when they’re scared.”
“That’s also what people say when they don’t want to participate in something stupid.”
“Convenient.”
Jean returned to her book with the unmistakable air of someone dismissing both the argument and the person making it.
He managed approximately three seconds before the silence became intolerable.
“I mean, it’s fine if you can’t dance.”
Jean’s gaze continued moving across the page.
“Not everybody has rhythm.” She gave him nothing, not even the satisfaction of looking up.
Peter shifted his weight against the counter while studying her face for some weakness in the performance.
“Or coordination.”
One of Jean’s eyebrows moved.
Peter saw it.
The tiny reaction should have been warning enough.
“Especially coordination.”
“We’re ending this.”
Peter’s grin widened immediately
