Raine-y Day

Summary:

Raine and CC enjoy a rainy day inside.

Notes:

so...
session 6 was insane.
I needed to let Raine and CC have some happy times after all of that.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"What do you have planned today, CC?"

"I was going to check on my sunflowers. What were you going to do today?"

"I was thinking of checking out what is going on in the city today. Maybe do some scavenging, too."

A loud boom rang out across the city. Raine opened the door and took a step out, gazing up at the darkening sky. Clouds swirled in an angry tempest. A biting wind buffeted Raine on its way up the hill. "I don't think we're going anywhere today, CC. It looks like it's going to rain, and a pretty bad storm at that."

"I think I have some sort of card games in here. Maybe we can have a fun day in, then?" CC suggested, moving across the room and rummaging through drawers and cabinets before pulling out a deck of cards.

Raine turned around and walked back into the house, shutting the door behind her. She pulled a book from her bag, the edges torn and pages falling out with a cartoony picture of a robot holding a cake on the cover. "Well, I did find this cookbook in the library. Want to see what we can put together?" She cracked open the book, flipping through the pages. Loose papers floated to the floor as soon as they were freed from between the pages.

30 minutes later and the duo were sat on the floor across from eachother, cards laid out between them. A pie sat in the oven, cobbled together from scavenged resources. Rain pounded down onto the roof as thunder rolled though the city.

CC shuffled the cards in his hand, robotic eyes squinting at the symbols. "Go fish," he said. Raine leaned forward and plucked a card from the pile between them. "Do you have any uhhh… this one?" CC pulled a card from his hand and turned it to show Raine.

"Nope." Raine shook her head. "Go fish."

CC reached forward and grabbed a card. He moved a few of the cards around before pulling two from his hand and laying them down in front of him. "I think this is a pair, right?"

The house shook as thunder boomed. Lights flickered for a moment and then the house went dark. Raine looked up then back towards CC and finally to the oven. "Well, I guess the pie was almost done anyways."

Raine set down her cards and approached the oven, cracking it open to check on the pie inside. "I think it's done. Do you have any oven mitts?" Raine moved along the counters, opening and closing drawers and cabinets.

"I don't need them! Here let me get it." CC opened the oven door fully and reached in, pulling the pie out and setting it on the stove. Once the pie had cooled enough to serve, CC took two plates from the cubboards while Raine used one of her many knives to slice into the fresh baked dessert.

Wind howled outside and rain pelted the ground as the two enjoyed their cobbled together treat. After finishing their food, Raine took the plates to the sink, promising to properly clean them in the morning. She yawned and stretched.

"I think it might be getting late. It might be a good idea to power down for a bit while we wait for the power to come back on."

Raine gazed towards the window, seeing the dark clouds continuing to swirl outside. "Yeah." she sighed. "It looks like this storm won't be letting up anytime soon." Raine grabbed her blanket from its place rolled up in her bag before settling down in her usual corner and wrapping the blanket around herself.

"Good night, CC! I'll see you in the morning." Raine watched as CC settled himself down onto his charging pad.

"Goodnight, Raine."

Raine woke slowly to sunlight filtering in through the windows. The house was quiet as Raine gazed about, not moving from her usual sleeping spot by the wall.

There were no cards scattered about the floor.

No half-eaten pie cooling on the stove

A thin layer of dust coating the countertops.

No familiar android occupying the charging pad.

Raine sighed, then whispered into the empty house. "I miss you, CC."
