    A soft call of his name woke Damen with a panic. In the gloom of their bedroom, it took a while for his heart to settle, his body instinctively believing any anomaly in the night to be a sign of danger.

    Only faint moonlight instead showed him the true reason for his waking: Laurent, tangled in the silk sheets, writhing with his fine eyebrows drawn together, his pretty mouth parted. Sweat flattened the small gold hairs against his temple.

    A burst of fondness came over Damen. His husband was dreaming about him. He reached for Laurent's hip with a grasping hand.

    Dreams and a nightmarish past had melded into one murky present. They made tender, aching love, but Damen wondered if Laurent looked at him and saw him—really saw him, as everything he was. Ally, friend, husband. Prince-killer, brother-slayer.
