Chapter Text
It had taken Wednesday almost three weeks to catch up to Enid. She had followed every trace she could find, and interrogated (and incapacitated) a couple of hunters along the way.
Her main problem was that Enid would not stay in one place for long.
It seemed like every time Wednesday got close, the wolf had already moved on to a new location.
But today, luck seemed to be on Wednesday's side as she spotted fresh tracks in the woods.
"These are recent," Wednesday said to Thing, who was currently on her shoulder, "She can't be far now."
Wednesday followed the tracks for a few minutes and eventually came to a small clearing in the forest. In the middle of the clearing, sleeping rather peacefully, was Enid. Her fur was a little dirty with mud, and the nail polish was starting to chip off her claws, but it was still her.
Wednesday's face softened upon finally seeing the wolf after so long, feeling relieved that Enid was okay. She approached slowly, being careful not to wake the sleeping wolf. When Wednesday got closer, Enid caught a whiff of her scent and seemed to relax in her sleep, starting to dream about Wednesday.
"Enid?" Wednesday said. The wolf let out a sleepy grumble in response. "Enid, wake up," Wednesday tried again, but Enid still wouldn't wake up, not wanting her dream to end. Wednesday pouted. Enid always had trouble getting out of bed back in their dorm.
"Enid." Wednesday said more firmly. This seemed to work as Enid's eyes fluttered open. She grumbled as she got up and stretched, letting out a big yawn, and shaking herself to wake up. Only then did she realize that Wednesday was really standing right in front of her. It wasn't a dream.
Wednesday smirked as she said, "Howdy, roomie."
She barely had time to react when Enid wrapped her arms around her in a bone-crushing hug, letting out a howl of pure joy as she held Wednesday tight.
Thing crawled his way up to Enid's shoulders, and scratched behind her ears, which caused her to loosen her grip on Wednesday as her leg started kicking.
"Oh, Enid," Wednesday said as she ran her fingers through Enid's soft fur, "You smell of roadkill."
Enid let out a guilty whimper and continued nuzzling into Wednesday.
They stayed like that for a few more minutes before Wednesday said, "Come on, Enid. Let's go home."
And the colorful wolf was eager to oblige, following Wednesday out of the woods.
