“Light?”

Misa didn’t waste time quietly squeezing her way through the crowd and chirping apologies. She kicked the first boy in the back of his knees, and shoved the rest aside, pummelling through the gathering swarm of flies to a carcass to drop to her knees beside her boyfriend.

“Light, darling, are- are you ok?”

Maybe more pet names would help. Light seemed to hate them so much, maybe they’d stop him spitting blood onto the ground like there was nothing more in his head than expelling any trace of this defeat.

“I’m fine.” Light wiped his mouth, with the back of his hand, and the clamouring girls cooed in a symphony that grated on every bone in Misa’s body. “You can go, Misa.”

“You need help!” Dropping to her knees, Misa went through her handbag, finding a pack of tissues, which she began to fiddle with even as Light dint see her so much as a glance. “You shouldn’t get into so many fights, its dangerous, I- I knew you’d get hurt eventually…”

“I don’t get hurt. I’ll beat him next time.”

Misa’s eyes were sad and pleading, as she held out a tissue for Light to wipe the blood off his teeth with. Her boyfriend always did think he would come out on top. And he would, she was sure, but if he would just accept her help now and again, he might win sooner. Then other people wouldn’t have to see him like this.

“Is that- Misa Amane?”

Whipping her head around, Misa shot a poisonous look at the offending, wide-eyed brunette, and hissed up at her. She was far too close to Light, staring at her like she was deserving of being in their presence.

Sometimes, Misa wished she could conjure a glass dome around her and Light when they were together. The world could look, but never touch. Light was hers, and she wished he’d stay still long enough for her to dote on his split lip and bloody face.

“Oh- I’m sorry-“

“Go away.” Misa gestured, furiously, and nearly swiped a hole in the brunette’s sheer tights with her nails in her anger. “All of you! Get away from him!”

Light was laughing, somewhere behind her. He had such a pretty laugh. The sort that nobody else could possibly find pretty, so Misa adored it, knowing it was special to her and her only.

Still, it sounded like it was hurting him, so Misa’s attention was snapped back like a rubber band, and she protected Light from their watchers with her body. His heart was still beating, which was always a relief, but he felt so tense under her hands as she tried to massage small circles into his back.

“Where do you want to go? So- so we can get away from all these people…”

Light twitched, and Misa fretted that he was about to throw up, but he just spat another mouthful of blood onto the pavement. She was oddly captivated by it, watching the bubbling scarlet join red stains littered across the concrete.

It was so pretty. That had been inside Light, and now her fingers trailed through it, staining pale skin like watercolours.

Light was staring at her, disgusted, and Misa startled back to herself.

“Get off me, Misa.”

“Oh- L- Light, I’m sorry-“

“I’m fine. Just… leave me alone, ok?”

He must need space. Light’s pride always took such a beating whenever he lost—which Misa saw him do so rarely, she spent too much time enjoying the time he felt good about himself and taking it for granted. She should do whatever he wanted, remind him that he was the most important person in her world and should be in everyone’s.

“Ok, darling.” Reaching for his face, Misa pressed their foreheads together briefly, then pulled away. “Goodbye kiss? I’ll come round to yours this evening, check that you’re-“

Light kissed her.

He tasted of blood, and dirt, and an anger that Misa would have been more than happy to allow him to take out on her, but the kiss was almost restrained. His tongue remained in his mouth, even as the blood leaking from his lips and gums spilled into hers anyway, and he let Misa kiss him back properly, for once.

It was wonderful. Light was such a good kisser, always showing her what to do, and now he wasn’t, Misa could only assume she was well-trained enough that he didn’t need to. Light trusted her to kiss him like he deserved.

She pulled away, and Light’s expression wasn’t as unhappy as it had been.

“I’m fine, ok, Misa?” Light dipped his head, spitting again onto the concrete, only it was most saliva now. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Are you… sure about that, Light?”

Misa watched him, worried, but she’d already shifted her weight away to give him space. Not too far, and close enough to keep off the small crowd she hadn’t scared away, but Light’s command was only being disobeyed by her stupid brain. Every other part of him was ready and willing to do whatever was asked of her.

“Yes.”

“But… I don’t want to leave you like this…”

Slowly, Light sat up, first sitting back on his knees and letting out a low hiss of pain, as he felt across his stomach. Misa knew better than to touch. She just sat back, hesitant as her skirt touched the concrete, and waited for his signal that she could help.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re hurt. I shouldn’t… I shouldn’t leave you.”

Misa stuck out her lip, making it clear to her boyfriend exactly how little she liked that idea. It hurt, to even imagine abandoning Light when he was hurt.

“I’m-“

“Can I just take you home? Please? Make sure you don’t get hurt again?” Misa clasped her hands, watching Light wipe his mouth again, and scowl at the scarlet trail left on his skin. “Do you need more tissues?”

“You know- yes, Misa. More tissues. You can… come home with me.”

Pushing himself to his feet, Light looked around, and scowled. That was enough to send the last few stragglers running, that as the blood on his teeth and chin.

From where she was kneeling, Misa would call him beautiful. Light was always beautiful, of course, but now more than ever. Like her personal bloodsoaked angel to care for, from whom she would serve any word from those bloody lips.

“Get up, Misa.” Light adjusted his uniform shirt, and grabbed his jacket from where he must have thrown it before starting the fight. “We’re leaving.”

Finally. They could get away from all these people who wanted to look at them. Misa couldn’t wait.

She did wait, for a moment, but Light seemed to trust her to get up on her own, as he started walking away, blazer slung over his elbow and blood drying on the hand by his side.

Notes:

these aren’t gonna be great. Idk why but this was really fighting me this year and I can say as I write day 20 I still don’t think I’ve found my rhythm. Hopefully I just get this finished.

Also! It’s my birthday on Saturday, so expect like an absurd amount of posts then, and *none on Sunday* (aside from day 4). I am alive, I’m just posting on average more than once a day for the next month, and… holy shit, guys. I’m having a great time, but holy shit.
