Work Text:
Nina hadn’t wanted to go to this stupid party, usually she was in the mood for this kind of stuff, but since she and Matthias broke up around 2 months ago, (66 days to be specific, but she’s not counting), she didn’t want to be around couples happily dancing together.
Inej had asked her to come, saying that for once Kaz would be there, and that she didn’t want to miss it, but she also didn’t want to go alone, so Nina ended up accepting.
“Alright, I’ll come, but don’t expect me to wear something fancy, I don’t particularly want to dress up” she had said.
Inej had chucked, “yeah, no problem, as long as you’re coming”
But now she was cursing Inej, and she wished she had put something else than an old hoodie and faded jean pants when she saw Matthias on the other end of the dancefloor, they locked eyes, and Nina heard Inej chucking next to her.
“You knew about this? Nina hissed
Inej looked at her innocently, battling her eyelashes, and answered in a sweet voice, “knew about what?”
“I swear to God, Inej you-“
Jesper appeared next to them, stopping her in her track.
“Oh Nina! You came! That’s wonderful”
She eyed him suspiciously.
“Yeah, wonderful, indeed” she answered, and Jesper was glad Nina didn’t have superpowers or something, because he was pretty sure she would have killed him on the spot if she had.
Inej and Jesper were talking to each other in a hushed tone, probably happy that their plan worked – because there was no way Jesper didn’t know about this – leaving Nina to her thoughts.
Seeing Matthias bothered her more than she would admit, not only because she was still angry at him, but also, and more importantly, she still loved him, even after two months – 66 days – and desperately wanted to move on, to not let it consume her entirely. Why Inej and Jesper orchestrated a whole plan to make them see each other again, she had no clue.
To add to her despair, she felt a tap on her shoulder and was faced with Matthias when she turned around.
“Uhm hi? How are you? It’s been a while.” She heard him say awkwardly.
She plastered a smile to her face and answered “I’m fine yeah, what about you?”
He shrugged, “I’ve been better.” Before she could add anything, he continued “Look- I know the last time we saw each other was a bit…chaotic”
At that she snorted, chaotic was definitely a word for it yeah.
“But I’d love to catch up with you, if that’s okay? And I feel like we have stuff to say to each other.”
“Like what?” she asked, leaning closer, suddenly feeling bold.
“Like…I still love you? And I don’t know if you still feel the same way but-
He was stopped by warm lips on his, and kissed back as a reflex.
They parted a few seconds later, and Nina whispered, “yeah. We should catch up”
He smiled, and leaned down again for a kiss, not paying attention the cheers of their friends behind them. It wasn’t exactly the catch up he had planned, but he’ll take it.
