Work Text:
Wednesday and Enid had recently gotten together after both confessing their feelings in an awkward manner. It hadn't been easy for either of them, considering how they'd had a rocky start when they first met and it took a long time for Wednesday to even start to see Enid as a friend. So naturally, Enid had been doubtful that the emo girl would ever feel the same.
But as it turned out, said emo girl did in fact feel the same and had felt similarly awkward in bringing it up.
Nevertheless, that was all behind them now. Enid had wanted to get out of their shared room for a bit and had somehow managed to drag her goth girlfriend out with her.
For all of Wednesday's complaining and protesting, she could hardly say no to the idea of spending more time with her bubbly girlfriend.
Now they were laying down side by side and staring up at the star-laden sky.
They alternated between quiet conversation and complete silence, studying the stars all the while.
Enid smiled to herself as she took in the moment. She was out here stargazing with her girlfriend. It felt like a scene straight (well, not straight in her case) out of all the romance novels she so greatly enjoyed reading.
She stole a glance over at Wednesday, noticing how the dark-haired girl’s usually piercing gaze had softened a bit for once. She actually looked content, maybe even happy.
“This is so romantic,” Enid commented, returning her gaze up to the stars.
“You're so weird,” Wednesday replied as bluntly as ever, but there was no trace of judgment or mocking to her tone. She just sounded fondly amused.
Enid shifted her gaze back over to her girlfriend. “Am I? There's something objectively romantic about staring up at the sky with your partner.”
“But does it have something to do with the setting or is it just because you're here with a partner?”
“Hm…I think it's both.”
Wednesday chuckled, not really able to argue her girlfriend's point. “Fair point, I suppose.”
“But it's definitely mostly because I'm here with you.” Enid scooted a little closer.
“Agreed.” Wednesday reached out and slipped her hand into Enid’s.
Enid glanced at her, surprised that she was not only touching her, but initiating the touch. It made her think back to the early days of them meeting when Wednesday would never allow any sort of touch. It reminded her of how far the dark-haired girl had come since then.
Wednesday looked back at her, her dark eyes intently watching the blond girl. She gently squeezed Enid's hand.
Enid smiled, relishing in the touch.
They remained like that for a minute, gazing up at the stars.
Enid glanced at her with a sly smile. “What was it you said earlier? That I'm weird for saying this is romantic? And now you're holding my hand?”
Wednesday squinted at her, but there was no heat to it. She just held the other girl’s hand a bit tighter. “Shush.”
Enid laughed, the motion not lost on her.
“Hey, don't laugh,” Wednesday protested.
“Sorry,” Enid replied, trying and failing to choke back the giggles.
The two of them lapsed back into silence and stared up at the endless sky with stars peppered all throughout it.
Eventually, they made their way back to their room and drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep after bidding each other goodnight.
