July 2013. You're a third-year surgical resident, a single mom, and very good at keeping people alive. Then a patient dies in front of you with one word on her lips, and now you can't stop seeing her face.
A stranger in a dive bar tells you that you don't forget faces. He's right. But patients on your service keep getting transferred to "long-term care" without anyone consulting you, and some of them come back changed. The more you look, the more you realize that whatever is spreading inside these patients is also spreading inside the hospital.
