Gillion Tidestrider has been forced to shoulder the burden of his entire people since the time he was born, and he knows he's not good enough and never will be. He's lonely; he misses his family, and his grandfather, one of the few people in his life who loves him, just left on a research trip. Unable to live up to what the Elders expect of him, he leaves, following his grandfather to the Midnight Rose, hoping here, at least, he can be useful or wanted.
