Work Text:
Stephanie Brown is an independent woman.
She can fend for herself.
And she is doing just fine.
The wind blew her blonde hair over her eyes, and she tucked it further under her purple hood. The wet suit was starting to make her cold, but what could she do about it? Even though she was clearly alone, she wasn't about to go stripping.
The sun started setting, and the water started to settle more over the sand. It was a beautiful island, really. Small—but still.
Steph pulled out her phone, going to the group chat with all the other bats. Her comm wouldn't work for some reason. Maybe it got damaged in the fight?
The fight... it was intense. Huge drug operation that Red Hood was trying to sway ended up becoming the Bat's problem once becoming an international issue. The men were transporting the drugs by ship, and so it was decided the best way to stop it was to sneak on. Steph, Jason, and Dick ended up going. All suited up, of course.
When passing this island, the fight got to its climax, and... Steph may or may not have gotten tossed out of the boat. But it was fine! She is a good swimmer. Well, good enough to make it to shore at least. If the water was any more rapid—or cold—she would probably have died. Not exactly a fun thought.
At least the fight didn't physically injure her. A few bruises was all she managed to receive before being brutally chugged overboard.
"Come on," she muttered to herself, "Go through."
None of her messages would send.
It shouldn't have been surprising, because, well, she was on an island. Trapped, on an island? Stranded? Maybe.
The ship was that Jason and Dick were supposedly still on was long gone. It was a massive ship, and yet Steph couldn't see it at all in the distance. Oh well, it was dark out now, so maybe that's why.
She was sitting on the sand now, going through her options. There was a good amount of them, but not all of them were actual good ideas.
Wait for them to rescue her?
Try and build camp?
Sit here and keep trying to contact them, hoping the service will change somehow?
Walk around and look for food or water? Maybe there would be some non-poisonous berries or some shit.
Steph felt pretty useless.
If she got really desperate, she could always send out an SOS. But that would be embarrassing, and it wasn't like she was actively dying or anything crazy. Give it a few hours and maybe she'd come back to that idea.
The most worrying thing was just the fact that she had no food or water. She would've had some in her belt, but it was weighing her down too much in the water and she was forced to take it off. It had sank, otherwise she'd have tried to look for it. Not that she would be able to find it in the harsh sea.
Despite having multiple better things she could probably have been doing, she stayed where she was, sitting and watching the sunset.
Steph started getting more and more nervous as the orange sky faded to a dark black, the stars starting to shine overhead.
She was getting thirsty quickly, and was shivering.
"Fuck."
The SOS button seemed to taunt her, but she still pressed it.
Steph wasn't sure why she expected help to come immediately after pressing it, because that was stupid. She wasn't thinking straight.
Desperately, she stood up and started pacing around, looking out at the dark sea.
Nothing was there.
Her stomach hurt, aching for food.
Her throat burned, from the lack of water.
Even her head started hurting. Maybe a headache from the stress of the situation? Or maybe she was getting ill. Shockingly enough, being stranded on an island doesn't exactly do wonders for your health. Mental or physical.
Steph started shaking a bit more from the cold, but it was ok. Nothing dangerous—yet.
She found a patch of sand further up on the beach, and laid down. Her mask was starting to irritate her, but she didn't want to take it off, just in case someone happened to see her. It was a paranoid thought, but still.
Her eyes closed on their own accord, and she started drifting off to sleep. The conditions for sleeping were pretty much horrible, but she had nothing better to do. It was just too bad she had to eat stress and anxiety for dinner.
Hopefully the Bat's got her call for help.
Otherwise...
She fell asleep before she could finish the thought.
