Pete hovered in the doorway to Trevor's room. He wasn't sure he wanted to go in. That would just make this situation more real and he didn't want to think of it like that.
"Hey," Trevor said, glancing away from the TV. "What's up?"
Maybe standing across the room from Trevor wasn't a great way to avoid him. Who would have thought? Pete entered the room, trying to keep himself from seeming like a total nervous wreck.
"I'm going to Norway," he blurted out before he could think of any other way to say it.
Trevor raised his eyebrows. "Okay. Why are you going to Norway?"
"Because Thor wants to find out why his shipmates abandoned him." Pete sighed. "And Sam can't do it, so I have to."
"I'm guessing you're not feeling great about that."
"No, Trevor. I'm not." He felt bad getting frustrated about it, but what else could he do? There was no way out of this situation.
"Okay," Trevor said slowly. "Come here. Why are you upset?"
Pete sat down at the edge of the couch and put his head in his hands. "I've never gone this far. And it isn't even near an airport. What if something happens? I shouldn't have agreed to this."
Trevor scoffed. "No offense, but there is literally no universe where that would happen."
"What are you talking about? I almost did tell him I wasn't going."
"Yeah, but you didn't." Trevor shrugged. "Face it. Agreeing to do things you don't want to do is basically your signature move."
Pete blew out a breath. He felt like an idiot. As much as he wanted to fight it, Trevor was right. He did always somehow end up doing things he didn't want to, whether it was modeling for the others or trying to be nice.
"I can't say no now," he said quietly after a few moments. "It would be rude. I already got Thor's hopes up."
"I know." Trevor sounded resigned. He reached over and squeezed Pete's hand. "I get it. Just try to get it over with and be careful. And say no next time."
"Well, he basically told me that he was upset and it was all my fault for not going to Norway. Kind of hard to say no to that."
Trevor let out a low whistle. "That's a good guilt trip." Then he caught sight of the look on Pete's face and hurried to correct himself. "Sorry. That was insensitive."
"Whatever." Pete crossed his arms over his chest.
"It'll be okay. We can go on a date and watch the birdbath together or something when you get back. I'll even let you pick the movie next time we hang out. How about that?"
Pete couldn't help but smile. "Okay."
"And you'll try to say no next time?" There was a hopeful note to Trevor's voice. A little too hopeful, all things considered.
"I tried this time," Pete pointed out. But he nodded. "Yeah. I know. I'll try harder next time."
"Great. That's all I ask." Trevor patted his shoulder. "When are you leaving?"
Pete looked down at his lap, a shadow passing over his better mood. "Tomorrow. I had Sam book me on a morning flight before things get busy."
Trevor gave him a faintly exasperated look. "Of course you did." Then he clapped his hands together. "Okay. Well, then I guess we better give you a proper send off."
"I mean, I probably won't be gone for too long." Hopefully.
"So you don't want to make out?" Trevor gave him a look.
"Wait, no, I definitely want to do that," Pete said.
And as Trevor leaned forward and kissed him, one arm wound around his shoulders, Pete's resolve hardened. He wouldn't agree to do something he didn't want to this easily next time.
Then he put the trip out of his mind entirely, pulling Trevor closer and kissing him back.
