Work Text:
After an hour of sitting on the bench in the front yard, waiting to see if the tree would lose a branch or something, Trevor was bored out of his mind.
He turned to Pete. "I think we need to find better date ideas."
"I have to admit, now that I can leave the property, this is kind of boring," Pete said. "But there are other things we can do. I think Sam painted a wall earlier. We could go watch it dry down."
Trevor sighed. "That's basically the same thing. Isn't there anything to do around here? I mean, we can't even watch TV until your turn tomorrow."
"We really did stop having hobbies once Sam and Jay showed up," Pete mused. "Sometimes I miss our clubs. Hey, wait, we could go watch the basement fight club?"
"I don't really want to do that. I know you're into blood sport and all, but it's honestly a little too weird for me."
Pete shrugged. "Okay then. Looks like this and the paint are our only options. Unless you want to go on a walk again. But we did that this morning."
Even Trevor was starting to miss their clubs. And he had never been a huge fan to begin with. But sitting through Thor describing the difference between cod and herring was somehow starting to sound like a good time.
"Hey, you think Thor is giving one of his talks again soon?" he asked absently.
"No." Pete frowned. Then his eyes lit up with sudden excitement. "But Alberta said she was performing tonight! It's mostly the usual, but she said she was adding a new song that she heard on the Alexa."
That wasn't a terrible idea. Alberta was a good singer, even if she had been repeating the same songs for years now.
"Okay," Trevor said. "We can go to that. Do you think she'd sing Chumbawumba if I asked?"
Pete just gave him that look he got when he wanted to say no but couldn't bring himself to. It was a little exasperated and a little charmed. And weirdly endearing.
They sat on the bench a little while longer before separating for a while. Pete said he had to go help Alberta warm up, so Trevor went to watch the birdbath for an uneventful hour.
As the sun set, he headed back into the house and ran into Pete right as he walked through the door.
"Hey, babe," he said. "You want to head in?"
Pete's eyes flickered with warmth. "Actually, I was just heading outside for a minute before the performance. You want to come with?"
It wasn't like he had anything else to do. He took Pete's hand and followed him outside. The sky was streaked with pink and orange as they stood in the driveway.
"It was nice of you to help Alberta," Trevor said. "How did it go?"
Pete always bloomed when he got compliments. His whole face came alight like a firework. Trevor felt an odd sense of accomplishment whenever he made it happen.
"It was fine," Pete responded, his face a little red. "She gets stressed out before she performs sometimes. Apparently she's doing a few this time. We can go to all of them if you want."
Sounded like season tickets to the opera. Equally boring, although it was way less expensive and way less exclusive. Still, it was something to do.
"Maybe," Trevor said. "You feeling good?"
Pete turned his face towards the sky. "It's warm out here. I like it."
Before he could stop himself, Trevor leaned forward and kissed him. Pete hesitated for a moment before cupping Trevor's face in his hands and kissing him back, even though anyone could have been looking through the window.
"Let's head back in," Pete said when he pulled back, eyes fond. "We don't want to miss her first song."
"Well, maybe we can miss the encore," Trevor said in a low voice.
Pete shot him a small, knowing smile. "Maybe we can." Then he turned around, leading Trevor towards the door. "Come on. Let's go."
Trevor let himself be pulled back into the house. The concert didn't sound much more interesting than waiting for a branch to fall or watching an empty birdbath. But still, something about being there with Pete made it seem little more tolerable.
