    Summary

The Doctor is very angry with Rose. The universe has nearly come to an end because of her. But he doesn’t want to send her away, so he decides to give her a second chance. And as they both need time to recover, he takes her to Assisi in 1253, to the places where an old friend of his once lived. When they meet someone who knows them both, he decides to tell her how he met him.

Forty years earlier, in Gubbio, a wolf is terrorising the neighbourhood. The townspeople are preparing to turn out en masse to hunt it down. But the Doctor (who has only just survived the War) knows this is a terrible idea, because that wolf has been the subject of horrific experiments that have turned it into a weapon – and those responsible for the experiments are coming back to retrieve it. Yet a small man dressed as a beggar is determined to do everything he can to help the inhabitants and prevent a massacre. A man named Francis.
