Work Text:
The morning sun poured through the high shoji screens of the residential wing, casting soft golden stripes across the wooden floorboards. It was a quiet Thursday, and the campus was still half asleep.
For Megumi Fushiguro, however, the day had begun an hour before dawn with a silent, agonizing internal crisis.
He was not good with words. The idea of looking Satoru Gojo in the eye and casually saying, "Hey, thank you for taking me in when I was a kid, raising me, and putting up with my attitude for nearly a decade," felt physically impossible. It was too earnest, too vulnerable, and completely outside Megumi's emotional vocabulary. Every time he tried to imagine saying it out loud, his throat closed up and his brain short-circuited.
And yet, after the terrifying near-miss of the sparring accident a few days prior, the crushing weight of how much Gojo meant to him had settled deep into his chest. He needed Gojo to know. He needed his guardian to understand, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that despite all the eye rolling, the sarcastic remarks, and the occasional death threats, Megumi didn't just tolerate him. He loved him. He appreciated him more than anything in the world.
If words refused to leave his mouth, actions would have to speak instead. He was going to pamper and spoil Satoru Gojo like an absolute princess for twenty-four hours straight until the message got through.
Operation Prove I Don't Actually Hate You was officially underway.
Phase one began in the kitchen at 6:30 AM. Megumi tied back his hair, rolled up his sleeves, and carefully prepared a breakfast masterpiece. He baked fresh, buttery croissants until they were golden brown and flaky, brewed a steaming cup of dark roast coffee just the way Gojo liked it, and prepared an exceptionally rich, velvety cup of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. He arranged everything neatly on a polished wooden breakfast tray, adding a small vase with a single wildflower for good measure, before carrying it down the hallway toward Gojo's private quarters.
He nudged Gojo's bedroom door open with his hip. The room was dark, heavy with the scent of expensive detergent and cool morning air.
On the massive king-sized bed, a sprawling lump of white hair and duvet was dead to the world. Gojo was thoroughly refusing to wake up, buried face-down under three layers of blankets, snoring softly.
Megumi set the tray down gently on the bedside table. He didn't use his usual rough waking method. There would be no pulling off the blankets or dumping ice water today. Instead, Megumi climbed gracefully onto the edge of the mattress, sinking slightly into the soft bedding. He sat cross-legged beside Gojo's hip, looking down at the overgrown, sleeping menace who had somehow managed to raise him into a functional human being.
"Tōru," Megumi murmured softly, his voice gentle and clear in the quiet room. "Wake up. Good morning."
The effect was immediate and violent.
It was as if an electric current had shot through Gojo's nervous system. The blankets flew back in a flurry of motion, and Gojo's bright blue eyes snapped wide open, darting wildly around the room with the fierce, hyper-vigilant adrenaline of a man who thought an assassination attempt was underway.
"Megumi?!" Gojo choked out, bolting upright. He grabbed Megumi by the shoulders, his eyes wide and panicked. "What happened?! Is there a special-grade curse breaching the barrier? Do you need money? Are you hurt? Why are you looking at me like that?!"
Megumi blinked, entirely unphased by the dramatic reaction, though a faint tint of pink dusted his cheeks. "No. Nothing's wrong. I'm just calling you Tōru. Can I not call you Tōru?"
Gojo froze. His hands slowly slipped off Megumi's shoulders. He stared at him like he had just grown a second head. "You called me Tōru. You haven't called me Tōru since you were eight years old and wanted me to buy you a rare breed of toad."
"I'm allowed to use your name," Megumi muttered defensively, looking away.
Before Gojo could process the linguistic anomaly, Megumi shifted closer. Without giving Gojo a chance to protest, Megumi reached out, gently took the back of Gojo's head, and guided him downward so that Gojo's head rested comfortably in his lap.
Gojo let out a breathy, involuntary gasp, completely paralyzed by shock as Megumi's fingers immediately drifted into his messy white hair, beginning to slowly, rhythmically massage his scalp.
"Just go back to sleep for a second," Megumi murmured softly, scratching lightly behind Gojo's ears the way one might soothe a startled cat. "Then wake up."
Gojo melted instantly. The tension in his spine evaporated, his eyes drifting half-shut as a low, blissful sigh slipped past his lips. The combination of the gentle head-scratching and the soft, soothing cadence of Megumi's voice felt like illegal levels of comfort. I must be dead, Gojo thought hazily. This is heaven. I died in my sleep.
And then things escalated past the point of mortal comprehension.
Megumi looked down at Gojo's blissfully relaxed face. Moving on pure instinct and a desperate desire to convey what his tongue could not, Megumi leaned down, closed his eyes, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss directly onto the bridge of Gojo's nose.
SNAP.
Gojo's eyes flew wide open. Every single muscle in his body went rigid.
He stared up at Megumi in absolute horror and disbelief, as if he had just witnessed a glitch in the matrix.
"Megumi," Gojo whispered, his voice trembling as he grabbed Megumi's wrists with both hands, staring up at him like a ghost. "Who are you? What did you do with my kid? Where is the real Megumi Fushiguro, and what kind of cursed technique are you using to impersonate him?!"
Megumi rolled his eyes, a deep red flush blooming across his face, but he didn't stop. In fact, doubling down on his mission, Megumi completely ignored the interrogation and proceeded to pepper Gojo's face with a rapid succession of soft, fond, entirely earnest kisses, brushing his lips gently across Gojo's cheekbones, his temples, and his forehead.
"Get up," Megumi said, his voice dripping with an uncharacteristic, humiliating gentleness as he continued to cup Gojo's face. "Breakfast is ready. And don't make it weird."
"It's already weird! You're kissing my face! Unprompted! Without me holding a gun to your head!" Gojo wailed, though he made zero effort to move away, his hands loosely gripping Megumi's wrists while his face burned a bright, delighted crimson. "Are you dying? Do you have a terminal illness? Are you trying to butter me up before you ask to buy a tank?!"
"I'm not dying. Just eat your croissants," Megumi muttered, though a shy, genuine smile finally broke through his stoic expression as he pressed one final, lingering kiss to Gojo's temple before gesturing toward the bedside table.
That, however, was only the opening salvo.
For the rest of the day, the entire campus of Tokyo Jujutsu High bore witness to a psychological anomaly so profound it nearly caused a collective systems failure among the student body.
During morning training, when Gojo casually missed a dodge and took a harmless dummy punch to the shoulder, Megumi didn't roll his eyes and tell him to pay attention. Instead, Megumi walked over, brushed the dust off Gojo's uniform jacket with meticulous care, asked if he needed an ice pack, and handed him a chilled juice box.
Yuji dropped his wooden sword on the training ground and stared at them, whispering in absolute horror to Nobara, "Did Fushiguro get replaced by a body double? Is this a cursed womb situation? Should we call an exorcist?"
"He hasn't insulted Satoru once all morning," Nobara murmured back, her eyes wide as she watched Megumi gently wipe a speck of dirt off Gojo's cheek. "It's unnatural. It's like watching a wild tiger hand-feed a bunny rabbit. I'm taking pictures for blackmail."
At lunch, Megumi bypassed his own favorite foods to meticulously pick every single green vegetable out of Gojo's bento box, because Gojo hated bell peppers, and handed him the remainder with a quiet, "Eat your lunch, Tōru."
Gojo nearly choked on his rice, coughing violently while his face turned the color of a stoplight as Panda patted him on the back with enough force to dislocate a spine.
By mid-afternoon, Megumi had carried Gojo's heavy paperwork bag for him all the way from the administration building, refusing to let Gojo lift a finger, and had even brewed him a fresh cup of tea every two hours like an excessively attentive Victorian butler.
By 10:00 PM, the campus had grown quiet.
They were finally back in Gojo's quarters, lying side by side on the massive mattress. The room was dark, illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through the paper screens.
Gojo had been staring up at the ceiling in profound, bewildered silence for the last twenty minutes, turning over every single event of the day in his mind like a puzzle he couldn't solve. Finally, he couldn't take the suspense anymore.
Gojo rolled over onto his side, propping his head up on one hand, looking down at Megumi, who was lying flat on his back staring straight up, looking remarkably tense.
"Alright, that's it," Gojo whispered, breaking the quiet. "Talk to me. What happened?"
Megumi blinked, keeping his eyes glued to the ceiling. "What are you talking about?"
"Megumi, you called me Tōru. You brought me breakfast in bed. You kissed my face. Multiple times. Voluntarily. You carried my bags, you fed me pastries, and you haven't threatened to summon Mahoraga once all day," Gojo listed off on his fingers, his expression a mix of deep affection and utter bafflement. "Are you being blackmailed? Did a curse curse you with an overwhelmingly affectionate debuff? You can tell me. I'll beat them up."
Beside him, Megumi went completely still.
The dark, quiet room amplified the sudden, heavy silence. Slowly, the defensive armor cracked. The teenager who could face special-grade curses without blinking suddenly looked as timid, shy, and utterly exposed as a little kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Megumi's hands curled tightly into the fabric of the blanket over his chest. He didn't look at Gojo. He couldn't. His cheeks burned hot in the dark.
"I wanted," Megumi started, his voice coming out as a rough, quiet whisper. He swallowed hard, trying again. "I wanted to show you how much I appreciated you."
Gojo stopped breathing. The playful, teasing light in his blue eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, sharp wave of stillness.
"I, uh... um," Megumi continued, his voice trembling slightly with uncharacteristic vulnerability, his defenses entirely stripped away. "I'm not good with words. You know that. I can't. I don't know how to say thank you for everything. For taking me in. For raising me when you didn't have to. For staying when everyone else left."
Gojo's heart clenched so tightly it physically ached.
"I tried to think about how to say it," Megumi whispered, his voice cracking just a fraction as he stared blindly at the ceiling, his fingers clutching the blanket harder. "Every time I tried to open my mouth, it sounded stupid. It felt like it wasn't enough. So I thought maybe I could do the actions instead. I wanted you to know that I don't. I don't hate you. I appreciate you so, so much."
The confession hung in the quiet air of the bedroom, heavy, raw, and overflowing with a lifetime of unsaid gratitude.
For a long moment, Gojo didn't say anything. The invincible sorcerer, a man who always had a witty comeback or a loud joke ready, found himself completely, utterly struck dumb.
Then, very gently, Gojo shifted closer.
He didn't tease. He didn't laugh. He reached out in the dark, slid his arm under the blanket, and wrapped both arms securely around Megumi, pulling him firmly against his chest into a warm, unbreakable embrace, tucking the boy's head neatly beneath his chin.
Megumi stiffened for a split second before exhaling a long, shuddering breath, finally relaxing into the hold and wrapping his arms around Gojo in return, burying his face against his guardian's shoulder.
"You idiot," Gojo murmured softly, his voice thick with emotion, pressing a long, tender kiss into Megumi's dark hair. "You didn't have to turn yourself into a personal butler to prove that to me."
"I did," Megumi mumbled quietly against Gojo's collarbone. "Because I'm terrible at saying it."
"Well, your actions were loud and clear," Gojo whispered, his arms tightening around him, holding him close as if he never wanted to let go. "And for the record, you don't ever have to worry about saying it, Megumi. I already know. But hearing it, or feeling it, like this, it means everything to me. Thank you."
Megumi let out a soft, breathy sigh in the dark, closing his eyes as the last remaining tension drained from his bones. He let himself stay wrapped up in the warmth, safe and completely understood, knowing that no matter how clumsy his words were, he never had to doubt where he stood again.
They stayed like that for a long time, wrapped up in each other, the silence comfortable and warm. The moonlight shifted slowly across the floor. The world outside was quiet.
And for the first time in a long time, Megumi felt completely at peace.
"Hey, Tōru?" Megumi whispered, his voice barely audible.
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
Gojo's arms tightened around him. A tear slipped down his cheek, warm and silent.
"I love you too, Megumi. More than anything."
And they fell asleep like that, tangled up together, two people who had found their way to each other against all odds.
Family. Not by blood. But by choice. And that was the best kind of all.
