“Ah.” In his distraction, he seems to have forgotten why he was patting at empty pockets. “My deepest apologies. This is the third-”
“No, it’s fine! It’s fine, really.” Childe grins, and Zhongli wonders if, at some point, he’ll need to shield his eyes. “I don’t mind. Paying for a friend never hurts any wallet, you know.”
A friend. Zhongli almost repeats it out loud. This isn’t the first time Childe has referred to them in this way, and it certainly isn’t the first time Zhongli has felt it pang at his heart in a mixture of pain and joy.

Zhongli knew that the moment he revealed his selfish plan to the other, he would turn away from him. And he was prepared for it. But, as Zhongli watched the boat — holding a man who he cherishes dearly — set out for Snezhnaya, he couldn’t help but feel his heart wrench at the sight.
