Work Text:
Marlene's in her dorm room with Mary and Lily, getting ready for the Halloween costume party that is already starting in the common room. Like usual, The Marauders (as they call themselves) helped to plan this party, so it's probably going to be chaotic.
Chaotic is good. Marlene likes chaotic.
It's just... she was hoping to spend Halloween with her girlfriend. Sure, she still can, but there will be tons of people around them, so they probably can't kiss much.
Anyway, she's currently standing in front of the full-length mirror, attempting to do her makeup. Her costume this year is a pirate– matching Dorcas' lost princess– so she doesn't have to do any super crazy makeup.
But that's the problem.
Marlene can't remember the last time that she did casual makeup. She loves fun, bright, glittery eyeshadow, funky eyeliner, and dramatic red lipstick.
A pirate wouldn't have makeup like that, but not doing any makeup feels weird.
She huffs, setting the eyeshadow pallet down and softly stomping her foot in frustration. "Ugh!" She groans, pulling at her bleach-blonde hair.
"Woah!" Mary warns, "You're gonna mess up your hair."
At the same time, Lily asks, "Are you alright?"
Marlene crosses her arms and turns to the other girls. "I can't figure out how to do my makeup. You know how I usually do it, right?" She explains, and starts moving her hands as she speaks– a habit that she never realizes. "But that wouldn't work for a pirate, so what am I supposed to do?! I don't remember the last time that I did basic makeup– no offense." She adds that last bit because her friends makeup styles are what Marlene refers to as 'basic'.
"None taken," Mary says quickly.
"I could do it for you if you'd like," Lily offers.
Marlene nods quickly. "Please, this is stressing me out."
Lily– dressed like a vampire– stands up from her bed and walks over to Marlene, picking up a brush and a makeup pallet. She does a bit of concealer, some grey eyeshadow, basic winged eyeliner, and a bit of lipgloss, then tells Marlene to look at herself.
Marlene turns and looks back in the mirror, the ginger girl standing behind her to see her reaction. It's... different, but Marlene quite likes it. Lily is very good at doing a smoky eye, and it fits the pirate look perfectly.
"So... what do you think?" Lily asks.
"I love it," Marlene decides, making Lily grin. "Thank you."
Lily nods. "You're welcome."
"Now let me fix your hair," Mary says, walking over with a brush. Marlene bows her head slightly to be on her level, and Mary brushes out the knots from where she pulled at it.
Lily grabs the final piece– the pirate hat– and places it on Marlene's head. "Now you're the prettiest pirate ever," she compliments.
"Oi, I've got a girlfriend!" Marlene teases, laughing.
"You should go find her," Mary suggests. "I think she should be here by now."
Marlene makes her way down to the common room, where music is already blasting and people are already dancing. There are people from all of the different houses, and she hardly recognizes anyone.
She pushes through the crowd, trying to find at least one person that she knows.
Finally, she spots a blonde curly haired girl a few feet away from her. "Pandora!" She calls out, walking over.
Pandora turns towards her. "Oh, hey Marls! I love your costume."
"Thanks," Marlene says, out of breath from running around the common room. "Do you know where Dorcas went?"
Pandora thinks for a moment, then says, "She went to–"
"Pandora!" A familiar voice calls out. "I can't find her, I think–"
"Dorcas!" Marlene interrupts, running to hug her beautiful girlfriend. "Hi!" She greets, pulling away to look at her outfit.
Dorcas is wearing a fancy pink dress with a few tears in it. She looks like a princess who escaped from a dragon or something.
"You look... gourgeous," Marlene compliments. She's genuinely at a loss for words from her girlfriend's breathtaking beauty.
Dorcas blushes. "Thank you, so do you." She leans in and kisses Marlene's cheek, making her blush as well. "Wanna dance?"
"Do I–? Yes," Marlene answers, and lets Dorcas take her hand, leading her to the dance floor.
They dance to Rebel Rebel by David Bowie, and realize that the lyrics kinda fit their costumes. Rebel rebel you've torn your dress, rebel rebel your face is a mess.
Then, Marlene gets an idea. Usually, Sirius is in charge of music, and she's pretty good friends with him. So, she could probably ask him to play a specific song to make this evening with Dorcas special.
"I'll be right back," She tells Dorcas. "Don't go anywhere."
"Okay," Dorcas agrees, albeit a bit confused.
Marlene wanders around the party for a bit until she spots that familiar head of black curls. "Sirius!" She calls out, getting his attention.
He turns around, confused, then spots her. "Oh, hey, Marls!" He greets.
"You're in charge of music, right?" She asks, getting straight to the point and not even noticing his costume.
Sirius nods. "Yeah, why?"
"Could I request a song? For my girlfriend?"
Sirius eyes light up. "Of course! As long as I have it, that is."
"I'd be surprised if you don't have Killer Queen by Queen," Marlene jokes, knowing very well about Sirius' obsession with Queen.
"Oh! Yeah I was going to play that next anyway." He laughs.
Marlene sighs. "I walked all the way over here for nothing?!" She complains.
Sirius shrugs. "Not my fault," he says, then turns back to his boyfriend.
"I hate you, Sirius Black," Marlene groans, then walks all the way across the common room, back to her girlfriend.
By the time she gets back, Killer Queen starts playing. She takes a second to catch her breath, then grabs Dorcas by the waist, pulling her in.
"It's our song, babe," Marlene whispers. "I requested it just for you."
Dorcas smiles at her. "I love you." She stands on her tiptoes to pull Marlene into a kiss, lasting a little longer than it usually would in public.
The girls sway and dance to the song, sharing a few sweet pecks and singing the lyrics to eachother.
It's better than Marlene could have ever thought.
