Chapter Text

The day was as bland as all the rest, until it wasn’t.

It started out with the Avengers chilling in Stark Tower, eating breakfast, watching movies, training, the usual routine, until Friday came through all the tower to announce that Fury was calling, and Fury calling was never a good sign. As everyone put down their various activities and moved towards the meeting room, Steve suddenly got a gut feeling. He couldn’t describe it, because it was somewhere between impending dread and doom, and butterflies. The strangeness of it all was something he brushed off.

As he arrived, the rest of the team was already there or had started to shuffle into their respective seats that had never been assigned but it had got to a point where they all knew who sat where. Steve sat at the head of the table across from Fury, whose face adorned a scowl. Nat was too his left, followed by Clint, Thor, and Rhodey who definitely didn’t want to be there. To his right was Tony, who had a very enthusiastic Peter sitting next to him. He had no idea what Peter was on about, but Tony seemed to be paying attention just enough to know what was happening. Bruce sat on the other side of Peter, across from Rhodey, and he seemed to be half asleep before the meeting even had started.

By the time everyone was finally there, Fury had pulled up a map on the hologram behind him. As Steve inspected what it was, he realized it was another Hydra map. Disgust filled his thoughts as he remembered that everything he and the Howlies had worked for had been no use as Hydra lasted longer than any of them could. Everyone else had finally decided to turn their heads to Fury when he started speaking.

“We found another Hydra base in Alaska.” An obvious disgust had filled his voice even though he tried to make it not present, but Steve didn’t judge him, because he had felt the same disgust

“A few agents were sent out to the base but came back with little information, your typical underground base with bullshit floating around that we could find useful, so we’re sending you on a routine mission. Get in, get out, do what you need to do and don’t let others in your path, simple?” Fury said with no enthusiasm.

Everyone nodded their heads and looked around at each other before standing up and leaving to get into their various gear needed.

“Friday, can you fire up the jets and tell the others that we leave in 20?” Steve asked with a kind of bore in his voice that was only reserved for times like these.

“You got it Captain Rogers.” Friday replied with a happiness that most people wouldn’t be able to expect from a A.I., but Steve was used to it. He gave a small thank you and then left to change.

When he returned to the jets, most of the other people were there waiting for the others to finally arrive. Once they had situated in their respective spots, Tony took off towards Alaska, which would be a long flight if this wasn’t Tony we were talking about. They were there in 1 hour.

As they arrived, Steve started to talk to everyone.

“Alright guys, this is just the normal, we get, we get out. If you encounter something that needs to be seen, but in contact with someone else immediately. Keep your coms open because we don’t want any other incidents. Tony, Nat, and I will be the main part of this mission, we get in and we get out. Peter, I want you to stay with Tony and don’t wander off. Clint, Rhodey, and Thor are on standby for if things go off accord. Bruce, you stay back and we will be in contact if there’s medical injuries or something along that line, or if we need a quick escape. Everyone got that?” Steve stated and once everyone had nodded their heads he confirmed it with a great.

As Steve, Tony, Nat, and Peter set off into the building to search for information, they didn’t worry too much about seeing anyone there as there was no guards on duty and there was no people posted up outside the base, which is what they ones that had been abandoned looked like.

Steve had gone up to the second level, Nat had taken the first level, and Peter and Tony took the basement.

Steve could barely find anything that would have the slightest use to him, but he tucked anything that would be useful away into various areas of his suit which would hold important information. The majority of what he found was documents describing tests to recreate various useless items from the past. Few of the files had something that peaked his interest but the floor mostly consisted of trashed labs with broken glass and mysterious liquids that had seemed to soak into the linoleum floor, even though that should be possible. He reported his findings to the rest and that was the end of it, well he thought it was the end of it.

Nat had about the same luck as him. Most of the rooms were filled with computers and few had any important information, most of the stuff being outdated by a few months all the way up to a few years. The place had clearly been abandoned for a long time. She reported her findings and waited for the others to be done, just wandering.

Tony and Peter weren’t doing much better off than Steve or Nat. The had found some interesting lab reports that seemed to be talking about experiments. They didn’t specify what was being experimented on or what they wanted to try and make, but none of it seemed good. That was until Peter walked closer to this one wall.

Everything for Peter had been fine up to that point. There was no sense of danger or doom that filled him, but as he walked towards the end of this hallway, a weird feeling filled him. It was definitely coming from his spider sense, but it was more of a sense of someone being in danger. And this feeling only got stronger as he walked closer to this wall. When he started inspecting the wall for anything fake about it, Tony noticed his unease.

“What’s wrong kid?” Tony asked with only the kind of worry that could be harbored by a parental figure.

“This wall isn’t right, and my Spidey-sense is going crazy over it. It’s not like there’s danger, but someone else is in danger, and I can help them.” He kept pushing and feeling around on the wall to see if there was any secret hidden behind it.

“Underoos, I hate to break it to you, but that is a cement wall with nothing behind it. You’re not gonna find anything. And I don’t know what your Spidey-sense is telling you, but I’m not so sure it’s right.” Tony replied with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

“You’re probably right.” Peter huffed and shifted his weight to his left side when he heard a click. Both Peter and Tony shared a glance when the sound of stone grinding filled the air. The wall had split down the middle and was now opening to reveal a stone staircase that went down into pitch black nothing. Both Peter and Tony were filled with a sense of dread.

”You guys might wanna come see this.” Tony said over comms to Steve and Nat.

”See what? What did you find?” Steve asked with a sharpness that was rarely found in his voice.

“There’s another floor to this building, on that we didn’t know about, one that’s been erased from the maps.” Peter replied. Peter and Tony then waited for Nat and Steve to come.

Once they arrived, they had a look a shock and confusion, similar to the ones Peter and Tony had had not so long ago.

“So are we gonna check this out?” Peter asked.

”I guess we are. Everyone, keep your comms open, we found a new floor. You three, keep your weapons drawn, this could be dangerous, be prepared for a fight.”

Here we go, they all thought but didn’t voice as the group slowly descended into pitch black nothing.
