Work Text:

Watari sighed as he opened the kid's room door at 3:15 in the morning. The light from dozens of computer screens still illuminated L’s pale face. The peculiar thing was that today, the young genius detective L was sitting crouched on his chair in his trademark position—but his eyes were opened as wide as possible, his pupils dilated from the enormous amount of sugar he had just consumed.

And in front of L was a complete battlefield: pastry wrappers; empty macaron boxes; and at least five cups filled with towering mounds of strawberry ice cream.

“Watari,” L said, slowly turning his head 180 degrees like an actual owl, his thumb still covered in half-eaten ice cream. “I have just seen the future.”

Watari raised an eyebrow and calmly stepped forward to clean up the mess. “L, you have just eaten the entire supply of pastries meant to last for three days. And you need to go to sleep.”

“Sleep?” L giggled, the sound sending a slight chill down Watari’s spine. “Sleep is a waste of humanity’s time, Watari. Crimes are out there, and I... I can hear the sound of numbers moving through space!”

“Yes, yes, of course you can.” Watari sighed for the second time within a minute, silently praying for the sake of his blood pressure. “Would you like a cup of warm tea instead of gulping down another sugar cube?”

L blinked, his dark circles staring at Watari as though the old man had just suggested treason.

“Tea? Tea cannot save this world, Watari. Only sugar and logical reasoning can.” L muttered, before suddenly throwing himself backward in his chair.

Fortunately, Watari’s reflexes were lightning-fast, and he managed to catch the spinning chair just before the great detective could roll off and land headfirst on the floor.

L blinked at the ceiling, his voice suddenly growing quieter as he murmured, “Watari... my feet are floating... I think I can fly...”

Less than three seconds later, the steady sound of breathing filled the room. L had fallen into a deep sleep in that bizarre, knees-folded sitting position, still clutching a plastic spoon tightly in his hand.

Watari gently draped a thin blanket over him, shaking his head with an exasperated smile.

Whoa I feel so productive today.
