    Summary

Alger tried again, “It won't be as effective, but I could send a letter to a trusted informant–.”

Again, his suggestion was denied, and Alger sighed wearily as he pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling completely helpless. “I don't have any connections in Backlund or Tingen, or at least, none that can be trusted completely. I won't be of use if I am stationed here.”

The beautiful man with the ethereal features opposite him smiled, “That won't be a problem. It isn't your information channels that are required.”

“What is required?” Alger couldn't help but ask, and the man named Merlin Hermes smiled cryptically at him, gesturing with a slender finger for Alger to lean in closer as though he was intending to whisper a secret into his ear.

But before he could move to obey, Gehrman answered the question sharply, forcing Alger’s attention back onto him. “You.” Somehow, the word sounded like a threat, and it raised the hairs on the back of his neck.
