Work Text:

An irritating nuisance, a thing in the corridors, worthless with its intent. Of course it'll move around like a rat, disrupting the order of things.

Elias can feel it getting closer, and he had clicked his pen in anticipation. And when the doorknob turned, he watched the tentative slowness until the door creaked open. A sound that should not be there, the color of the wood has changed.

What entered is a distinction of perception, such an entity is a result of things in the past. He did not realize the path it would take for it was a deceiving notion all in itself.

For the man who entered was almost how he was before he was swallowed.

A simple blue coat, mitts hiding thin fingers, a toque sitting on its blonde curls. A soft nervous smile splayed on its lips.

When it closed the door, the deception eased almost immediantly for it changed its utmost demeanor.

Maybe it had to do with the Eye, or maybe it couldn't contain itself. It liked to have fun, but this annoyed Elias.

"What is it now?" Elias set the pen down in an awkward position when it should remain straight. He set his hands on the other, doing his best not to fidget. This would be any other conversation if he'd considered it one when it was a past assistant. The form barely held itself, which Elias had to reorient his gaze when the toque and mitts disappeared, the coat remained.

"Nothing, just…pretend I'm not here."

"I would consider in doing so, but your presence is far too eager to ignore." He had blinked, and it had gotten closer. Always changing, always moving. Elias, sometimes, was off a bit when looking at it, a simple blink could change the perspective of such distortion.

"Is that so?" Michael wondered, tapping its fingers on the desk. Normal, but surely, will change soon. It disliked remaining in its stolen form for too long. It liked disruption, distraction.

"What do you want?" Elias asked again, finding himself digging his finger into his own to ease his anger.

Michael, in its boyish smile, said, "Maybe I wanted to see you. Is that so hard to understand? I figured you would know already of my intent."

He has tried, but the answer kept changing. "Are you done?"

Michael kept smiling, fingers remaining human, and it reached its hand out to Elias.

He wouldn't let such a thing touch him, but he did not move, almost waiting for the pen to drop before he blinked. It stood at its door, sliding it open.

"Another time, Jonah," it said, walking through.

Elias watched, curious what has gotten over him. Maybe it's not him he's thinking about, but it was all so foolish in the end. He would not let past mistakes live so close to his present. He cultivated it for too long to allow remnants take over. But he looked, and the door had changed back to that dark wood.
