Work Text:
“We had different opinions on lots of things. Male Ents preferred big trees, full of green and not much more, while we preferred smaller plants, with flowers and fruits.”
Fimbrethil’s body waved sinuously while she spoke, like it was the breeze that was making the sounds and not her voice.
Little Faramir was fascinated and a little scared by the “talking tree”, and Diamond was amazed but a bit concerned, too, but Pippin had familiarity with Ents, and talked with her like he could do with a hobbit.
“I have to say that I agree with you!”
“Thank you!” her voice became sweet like grapes: “Those differences did not bother us, anyway. But the other Ents wanted us to like the same things they liked, and we fought about that. One day Treebeard told me that we were called Entwives because we were made to be their companions, and should conform to their wishes, and other unpleasant things. So, I proposed to the other female Ents to abandon them, and promptly we did.”
“My my!” commented Pippin: “That’s not the same story Treebeard told me. Next time I see him I’ll have to ask him why he lied to me!”
