Summary
Akivili wakes up on an old train after a bus crash on a mountain pass. The windows show nothing but black. In their hand is a paper ticket with their name on it and seven empty circles.
The Threshold Line carries people caught between life and death. When the bell rings, you get off. Every station has its own rules. Break one and you die there, and somewhere in the real world your body stops breathing. Survive, and the train punches your ticket. Seven holes take you to the end of the line.
The person sitting across from Akivili is Aha, a grinning former stage magician with damp red hair and a silver coin that never stops moving. Aha has ridden this train for three years. Their ticket is crowded with gold holes, and they have never gotten off.
Akivili wants to know why. Aha wants to know everything about the first person who ever caught one of their tricks.
A curious tour guide, a magician who laughs at everything, and a long ride through the dark toward the last stop.
