Work Text:
Hyunjin was never a fan of the cliche of coffee shops. First of all, he worked at a coffee shop. He worked overtime at his job at Dunkin not to only pay his bills and tuition, but because it made him happy in a way he’ll never really be able to explain. If you ever needed someone to cover your shift or stay a little later because you’re running late, Hyunjin was your guy.
He started working there during his senior year of high school after he turned eighteen. He applied to the university near by considering he never had any other plans to move away. His parents would probably cry if he was being completely honest.
All he had to do was pay for the loan on his car, his tuition, and gas. Gas was expensive, though, so he tried to make it so he could just walk anywhere he needed to go. That lead him to the Dunkin across the street from his house. The best decision he ever made was applying.
Though it seemed like as of recently his coworkers were talking about the cliche of coffee shops. Why exactly were they so popular in books and fan fiction? What is so exciting about a place where you get coffee and pastries?
The only good food at Dunkin is their hash browns. Hyunjin threw up over a donut once.
Despite all his attempts at getting Ryujin, Myah, and Jisung to stop talking about their coffee shop fantasies, they never did. They were the ones he worked on shift the most and he just had to accept at some point that falling in love with a customer was just their thing.
In no way did Hyunjin ever think that he would be the one falling in one with a customer until he did. One rainy Friday morning during the fourth week of the first semester a guy came in. Jisung looked at him and whispered into Myah’s ear that he was an omega. Whatever the fuck that was supposed to mean.
But he was beautiful. He was something out of Hyunjin’s wildest dreams, as if the universe decided to go deep into Hyunjin’s mind and find the exact kind of person he would be attracted to and make that person go into his place of work. Why did his coworkers have to be right about one of them getting a crush on a customer?
Hyunjin was there to make money and coffee, not fall in love with someone. The guy could be a high schooler and Hyunjin would not only never know, but Hyunjin doesn’t even know the guys name.
The guy goes over to the screen to order. Hyunjin’s eyes never leave his back.
“You’re not very subtle.” Myah mutters into his ear. “I thought this was something you would never do.”
Hyunjin has to remind himself that his coworker is sixteen and that he can’t hit her. His parents raised him with morals. You don’t hit teenagers and you don’t hit girls no matter how much they piss you off. “I’m going to superglue your lips together.”
Myah grins at him. All Hyunjin can do is roll his eyes and continue watching the guy order. He gets a pumpkin spice latte. Hyunjin never thought he would be the type to fall for a guy who drinks that shit, but here he is. This guy is so much more than his appearance so of course he’s going to be interested in things Hyunjin isn’t.
Again, he doesn’t even know the guys name. However the guy comes to the counter anyway and Hyunjin is so grateful that he is the only customer in store. Myah and Jisung both look at him with a twin look on their faces and Hyunjin can only take that as them telling him to go see what he wants. Hyunjin is about to try and make the pretty boy his.
Somewhere in the background, Hyunjin can hear the thing for his order go off.
“Hi, what can I get for you?” Hyunjin asks the guy and tries to keep his expression calm. He’s going to scare this poor man off if he looks way too excited to talk to him.
The guy tilts his head. “Do you have any strawberry donuts in the back? I was trying to get one but it wouldn’t let me order it.” It’s only then that Hyunjin realizes there is a lack of strawberry frosted donuts in the case. Strawberry frosted donuts just so happen to be Hyunjin’s favorite type of donut.
This is fate. This has to be fate. Hyunjin is going to make this guy his. “We might. I can go check for you?”
He doesn’t even get to receive an answer because Myah is bringing them up to the front. She even hands Hyunjin’s guy a donut in front of him.
Sigh. “Thank you so much.” The guy has dimples, and Hyunjin thinks that he wants to squish him. He wants to roll this man up in bubble wrap and never let anyone touch him ever again.
Hyunjin punches his palm. You don’t even know this guys name to be obsessed with him. Jisung comes over with the finished drink as Hyunjin rings him up for the donut. Hyunjin gets a glimpse of the name the guy used on the kiosk. Jeongin.
”Four shots of pumpkin?” Jisung questions. Jeongin nods with a shy smile on his face.
That’s certainly a choice. But who is Hyunjin to judge? Though, Hyunjin does see a chance to make a move on Jeongin.
“What’s the difference between me and that coffee?”
Jeongin tilts his head at him confused. “What?”
”I stay hot.”
Jeongin doesn’t even say goodbye. Just promptly walks out with his coffee and his donut while Myah and Jisung laugh at Hyunjin for his horrible attempt.
Jisung places a hand on his shoulder. “I don’t think that worked out the way that you wanted it to.”
It did not.
Jeongin comes back the next day and orders the same thing. And the following day. One of Hyunjin’s other coworkers, a guy his senior named Chan, tells Hyunjin that a guy matching Jeongin’s description came in and turned right back out when he saw that Hyunjin wasn’t on shift.
Hyunjin told Jeongin pick up lines every time they saw each other after their first encounter.
“On a scale of one to ten, you’re a nine because I’m the one you need.” Jeongin rolls his eyes at Hyunjin but there’s a smile that forms on his face anyway.
One that made Ryujin flick him in the forehead was Hyunjin telling Jeongin that life was short, and that Hyunjin thought he was hot. It wasn’t even that bad and Ryujin is genuinely just his biggest hater.
After learning that Jeongin had come in and left when Hyunjin wasn’t there, Hyunjin thought it meant Jeongin wanted to see him. He was right, to be fair. But he ramped it up, or at least tried to.
“Hey, can you tell me the material my shirt is made out of?” Jeongin doesn’t even look like he would be doing anything for fashion design, but Jeongin could make a trash bag look good and Hyunjin just needed Jeongin to touch his shirt to make his joke.
Jeongin reaches over the counter and takes a piece of Hyunjin’s shirt in between his fingers. He goes to open his mouth when Hyunjin nods, “yeah it’s boyfriend material.”
Jeongin shakes his head rapidly. “You can do better than that, and you know you can.” Jisung only laughed at him and called him a loser when Jeongin left.
Hyunjin would love to see Jisung pull literally anything or anyone that wasn’t a push door.
“How do you like your eggs in the morning? Scrambled or fertilized?”
”I was born a male, but I love your attempt Hyunjin Hyung.”
Ryujin told him that he was lucky Jeongin didn’t smack him across the face. She did it for him, though. It hurt.
”You know what’s sweeter than the pumpkin you drink?”
Jeongin looks up from the counter to send Hyunjin the biggest death stare he’s ever received. “Do not use the love of my life to flirt with me.”
Hyunjin has never given up faster in his life.
Myah sighs when Jeongin walks out of the Dunkin. Hyunjin is so pathetic it’s genuinely killing her. “Tomorrow, you will ask him to go out on a date with you.”
“Or what?” Hyunjin asks because clearly her coworker has never seen what happens when she gets irritated. How unlucky for Hyunjin that Myah has had enough of his fucking pinning?
The door opens and a young girl goes to stand off to the side for a drink she ordered online. “I’m going to ask him out for you.”
Hyunjin choked on his spit and had to go to the back, and Myah finds that she could not give a fuck.
Jeongin walks in at the same time he always does with the brightest smile on his face. Hyunjin is so whipped for him that it hurts. If Myah hadn’t said something to him when she did, Jisung thinks that he would have. Hyunjin is just so annoying about his crush.
He heads straight for the counter where Hyunjin’s already prepared his drink. There is no day that Hyunjin is on shift that Jeongin doesn’t come in, so…
”You look like trash.” Jisung is going to grab Hyunjin by his hair and slam him into a wall. “Let me take you out?”
Jeongin blinks at him. “Okay.”
“There is no way that actually just worked.” Jisung whispers in Chan’s ear. “They’re both hopeless.”
