“Where are we? It’s pretty cold!”
“Because we are on the mountaintop. Look!”
And Thorin brought her outside, where a breathtaking view met her: the entire valley of Dale was beneath them.
“It’s beautiful, Thorin, thank you!”
“The present is not the view!”
It was their first wedding anniversary, and Thorin had announced her that he had a special gift for her.
“Then what is it?” Oliviel was growing more and more curious.
“See this place? It’s like a natural terrace.”
“Yes, I can see that.”
“I was thinking that maybe if we close it with glass walls and a glass ceiling, we can make that thing, you know?, where plants grow in cold weather too.”
“Oh, like a greenhouse! It’s a marvellous idea! You know, I really think Dwarves should eat more vegetables…”
Thorin chuckled: “No, not that. I meant more like a garden. For you.”
“A garden?” Oliviel looked around her: “Really?”
“Yes. So you don’t have to go to Mirkwood every time you want to be in the woods. I mean, of course you can go whenever you want, they’re your family and-”
“Thank you,” she interrupted him, smiling sweetly: “It’s a very nice thought. I would love to have a place to go and be in the Nature without having to go away.”
She looked around herself: “It’s actually big enough to host some trees, too. And maybe there could be windows, so birds, bees and butterflies can come in. And maybe a system to collect rainwater for irrigation purposes. Also-”
She stopped when she noticed the way Thorin was looking at her.
“So,” he said: “I can assume that you liked your gift?”
“I love it very much, Thorin, thank you. A garden in Erebor! Only you could have such a crazy and splendid idea!”
