Case #859091 BERMAN, KATHERINE
23:08:15 Katie: Hey, babe.
23:08:17 Michelle: Hey. I'm sorry, it's so late, but if I didn't talk to someone I was going to spiral, and now I'm doing this all alone, and earlier the sound of the heater going off made me cry—
23:08:26 Katie: I know—hey, I know. You have me and you'll always have me. Not like your piece of shit boyfriend who can't even return a call.
23:08:39 Michelle: Yeah. Yeah.
23:08:45 Katie: What did you want to talk about? Because, you know, if you just want to sit on the line in silence, I can do that, and if you want to just listen to me yap about all my recent terrible Hinge dates, I can do that too.
23:09:06 Michelle: Uh…
23:09:11 Katie: Or we can watch a movie. Throw one on and take your mind off things. Or do you want me to come over? I could start the car up right now.
23:09:23 Michelle: Have you looked at the news at all recently?
23:09:29 Katie: What, like, on social media?
23:09:33 Michelle: Yeah, or anywhere.
23:09:38 Katie: Not more than I have to. Why?
23:09:46 Michelle: Did you see what happened over in Raccoon City?
23:09:51 Katie: Yeah, there was something about the hospital. Some kind of structural failure or electrical malfunction? I guess there was an evacuation. I hope all the patients got out. The whole area's been shut down or something. Why, did you know someone there?
23:10:19 Michelle: I don't know.
23:10:24 Katie: What do you mean, you don't know?
23:10:27 Michelle: I mean, I don't know. I don't know, this is crazy. I'm being crazy.
23:10:31 Katie: No, wait. Tell me what's on your mind.
23:10:37 Michelle: I think this pregnancy is making me insane.
23:10:41 Katie: I think you're handling "long-term boyfriend abandons you on the same night you told him you're pregnant" way better than I would be. Like, all things considered. Actually, I think you're not being insane enough.
23:10:51 Michelle: Katie.
23:10:55 Katie: Sorry, but I'm right!
23:11:00 Michelle: Katie.
23:11:03 Katie: Yeah, sorry, right, I'll stop talking about him. I'm just saying. You might forgive him, but a best friend holds a bitch ass grudge forever. If he ever comes crawling back begging your forgiveness—
23:11:12 Michelle: It's not that. It's just, I have a terrible feeling.
23:11:16 Katie: About what?
23:11:18 Michelle: I don't know. I told you, this pregnancy is making me insane.

THE RACCOON CITY TIMES
AFTERMATH AT RACCOON CITY GENERAL HOSPITAL
How the city is addressing rebuilding and cleanup efforts
by Cory Field
March 2, 2018, 1:50 PM MST
RACCOON CITY — Last month, Raccoon City General Hospital—a sky-scraping pair of buildings located in the heart of the city—was the site of an infrastructure failure when the skybridge connecting the two buildings at their twenty-fourth floors sagged and collapsed. Among the casualties included Umbrella Corporation scientists, doctors of the hospital, nurses, and several patients, all of whom had been in or beneath the skybridge at the time of the failure. Casualties are expected to rise in the coming days.
"I just heard this awful groaning," says a patient who managed to escape mostly unscathed. "And when I looked out the window I thought I saw—well, there was just a lot of rubble."
Rubble is the least of the city's concerns, though the chief of police, Brian Irons, is working around the clock with mayor Michael Warren to clear the debris from the hospital grounds.
"Raccoon City General was built not only as a place for citizens to seek treatment and wellness, but also as a center for cutting-edge biotechnology and bioinformatics," says Mayor Warren. Here at the foot of the destruction, at the time of the interview, he is wrapped in a hazmat suit and speaking to the Times through a respirator. "Right now, my top priority is to address our infrastructure for medical assistance. Our doctors and scientists are the people who keep our populations healthy."
Chief Irons agrees.
"Currently, it's looking like an architectural failure at the twenty-fourth floors," he says, peering with a hand shaded over his eyes to the ruined skybridge. "Once the debris is cleared and the fire department ensures no survivors are still inside, contractors will go in to investigate exactly what went wrong."
From the ground, tendons of exposed steel wire are visible. To imagine what it was like, being on the bridge at the time of collapse, brings a somber silence over the news crew. This is to say nothing about the stains upon the ground and the sides of the building, wine-dark and chilling in their implications.
The public has been concerned whether the surviving patients of the hospital were able to evacuate the area and find treatment at neighboring hospitals.
"Of course. Arklay County employs a wide network of medical couriers, drivers, and EMTs that provide transport for time-sensitive deliveries and patients. It is their invisible work that quietly saves the lives of dozens every day," says Mayor Warren.
Following the Times' visit to the Raccoon City General Hospital grounds, our team traveled to the neighboring cities of Colorado Springs, Cripple Creek, Cañon City, and Pueblo in search of hospitals who received an influx of patients. Although hospitals are not able to release any specific records, none reported receiving evacuees from Raccoon City General.
"We actually received a call from one of our colleagues at Raccoon City General the night of February 11—it was cut off, but they'd reached out and told us to be ready to receive a portion of their patients. We maintained a much larger overnight crew of doctors than we usually would in preparation. No one ever came," says a representative of UCHealth Memorial Hospital. "We're not sure what happened."
Representatives at the St. Thomas More Hospital in Cañon City and St. Mary-Corwin Hospital in Pueblo reported similar stories: expanded nighttime medical crews waiting on tenterhooks for evacuated patients from Raccoon City General Hospital that never arrived.
Meanwhile, Raccoon City remains under lockdown after the hospital's infrastructure failure out of an abundance of caution, as it housed a large number of biological agents used in research that may have been aerated during the time of the incident.

14:06:55 Michelle: Okay, I know, I know, hear me out—
14:06:58 Katie: I'm listening! And you better start talking, because tell me why I'm in the middle of work and getting texts that my best friend, who is four months pregnant, is driving herself to a city that is two hours away and still overrun by police blockades!
14:07:14 Michelle: I promise I won't do anything stupid. I just have to see for myself. I just don't believe that he'd leave a voice mail for me saying that he didn't know if we would ever speak again, and then not call if he could. He knows I'd start spiraling. I just need to know…
14:07:31 Katie: This whole thing is stupid. This idea is stupid! Even if you weren't four months pregnant, you're running toward a city everyone's trying to get away from!
14:07:45 Michelle: I'm just going to see. If I pull up to the city border and the blockade won't let me pass, then I'll give up and turn around.
14:08:01 Katie: And how, exactly, will that be worth your time? Do you think Bryan's going to walk out and meet you? What do you think you're even going to see?
14:08:11 Michelle: I just…I just want proof, I guess. That he's not coming home because he can't.
14:08:19 Katie: Babe…
14:08:22 Michelle: Yes, I know it's stupid. I've told you from the beginning that I feel insane. You don't have to like this, I just wanted to tell you so someone knows where I am. I'll go in the middle of the day, in broad daylight, and I'll share my location with you. I'm not looking for trouble. I'm just looking for Bryan.
14:08:51 Katie: No, you don't need to share location with me.
14:08:56 Michelle: What?
14:09:00 Katie: I'm coming with you. You're not going alone. I'll drive, so you can keep your eyes on our surroundings.
14:09:11 Michelle: You don't have to—your work—
14:09:17 Katie: —is already accounted for. I put in a shift swap request and it just got snatched up. When are you going?
14:09:25 Michelle: I love you. Tomorrow, I think.
14:09:29 Katie: Then I'll see you tomorrow. I love you, too.

Dash cam footage begun on 19 MAY 2018 10:03:47 beginning in Colorado Springs with footage recorded from front and rear. Vehicle carrying two female passengers (KELLEY, MICHELLE and BERMAN, KATHERINE). From Colorado Springs, vehicle traveled westbound toward Raccoon City from 10:03:47 until 11:49:20. Passenger voices audible throughout with discussions pertaining to the events at Raccoon City General Hospital on 11 FEBRUARY 2018.
Vehicle captured traveling uninhibited along Interstate 25 toward Raccoon City, beside Arklay Mountains. KELLEY, MICHELLE recorded making comments that "he's not out here," followed by "if he's hurt, he'd look for a main road, right?" Unclear what individual she is referring to.
Arrival at Raccoon City recorded at approximately 11:53:34, at which time the vehicle was stopped by RPD blockade at the city's southern border. Passengers are seen exiting the vehicle, leaving it in neutral, an estimated one hundred yards from blockade. Both are greeted by officers. Dialogue is inaudible.
Conversation persists approximately 10-15 minutes, after which all four individuals on camera visibly tense and look toward the city. Delayed low roar is heard in the recording. From behind the police blockade a large mass is seen surging toward the women and officers.
Shots are fired as the two female passengers, distressed, return to the vehicle and shift it into reverse. BERMAN, KATHERINE is once again driving and reverses the vehicle an estimated two hundred feet before pulling it around and putting it in drive. KELLEY, MICHELLE can be overheard shouting at high volume with questions about "what that thing was" while BERMAN, KATHERINE answers, similarly upset, that "it looked like a f****** monster."
The passengers' conversation continues as BERMAN, KATHERINE takes an alternate route. It is not clear why she did not return immediately to Interstate 25 and instead took a less-traveled road through the Arklay Mountains. Throughout this, the passengers theorize that an assumed individual named "Bryan" is trapped in "a city crawling with f***** up s***" and it is "no wonder he has not called."
At 12:39:40, the vehicle is brought to a sudden stop on an unmarked Arklay Mountain road when it comes upon an obstruction. A stationary vehicle blocks the road and another, a police cruiser, is overturned. Both women agree that the drivers of these other vehicles may need help and exit their own, leaving the car again in neutral.
KELLEY, MICHELLE is seen approaching the vehicle in the road, while BERMAN, KATHERINE is seen approaching the overturned police cruiser. Though muffled, both women's voices can be heard exchanging dialogue loudly. It is unclear whether they recognize the vehicles or the owners, though BERMAN, KATHERINE backs away from the police cruiser and vomits.
The vomitus, though unclear on the dashcam footage, resembles pale pus and can be seen causing instant and massive corrosion on the asphalt it touches. Footage captures KELLEY, MICHELLE hurrying to assist BERMAN, KATHERINE, only to retreat when another spell of emesis forces pale-pus vomit to arc from BERMAN, KATHERINE's mouth. This, too, corrodes the road.
Despite KELLEY, MICHELLE's efforts, BERMAN, KATHERINE'S left arm morphs, elongates, and exhibits inhuman behavior, stretching and grasping. KELLEY, MICHELLE, in distress, returns to her vehicle alone as the driver, and leaves BERMAN, KATHERINE behind.

"Hi, this is Erin calling from Umbrella Corporation, looking for Michelle Kelley. I'm sorry I was not able to reach you today. This call is in regards to your recent probes into Umbrella Corporation's research—we have it on good authority that you traveled to Raccoon City on May nineteenth and interfaced with several Raccoon City police officers, after which you conducted internet searches into our company in the early morning hours of May 20. Please note that continued inquiries into Umbrella Corporation's work and research will result in a cease and desist. If you should choose to ignore this, you will be forfeiting your right to a fair trial in a court of law. Dear Dad,
You would have been fifty-six if you were still here. When I was growing up, Mom never hid the fact that you passed while she was still pregnant with me, and she was quick to teach me about death young. Too young, maybe, but I remember thinking at the time, well, at least Dad was an adult. He'd basically lived a whole life.
But today I'm the age you were when you died.
I cannot stop thinking about how young you were. Practically just a kid. I turned twenty-eight this morning and I don't feel any different from when I was twenty-five, or when I was twenty-one (except, maybe, that I make better decisions). A whole life, I'd thought, when I was eight, then ten, then twelve. Now, as I sit here and write this, all I've been able to do is dwell on the fact that you had the rest of your life left to live.
I don't even have a partner yet. You had a whole baby on the way.
One of my confessions for this letter is that I resented you until I started getting old enough to understand how young you were. Everyone around me had started losing their parents to the G- and T-viruses, so I wasn't bullied for having a single mom, but everyone else had always been reassured that their parents would have been devastated to exit their lives. That they would have given everything to have stayed and watched them grow up.
Only Mom never said anything like that to me. She never told me, "Your dad would have been so proud," whenever I did well in school or got top marks in my class. She never said, "If only your dad could see the young woman you're becoming." Naturally, as a kid, all I could think was that you didn't want me, that you heard Mom was pregnant and ran out like a coward to die, and I believed this for years because it is easier to be angry at a dead person than to look at the hole where they should have been.
This is my first birthday without her. She was only fifty-seven. She caught something that they call Raccoon City Syndrome, though we told all the doctors that she'd never even stepped foot inside the city. I guess it never mattered, and anyway, viruses don't recognize city boundaries. She kept saying it was what she "deserved" because of something she did to a certain Katie, but she's never talked about a Katie. She had a whole life before me that I just never knew about. That's something else you learn when you're twenty-eight, I guess.
On her deathbed, about two days before she passed, she looked at me—we were separated by a screen, and I had to wear a full-body suit and mask—and she said, "You were the best thing I've ever done. I made someone as kind as your father was."
Kind. I'd only recently dropped words like selfish and cowardly from your name. Kind had never occurred to me. She had very little energy in the end, but she went on to tell me that the night you died, you'd been on your way to save someone's life. No, you weren't a doctor, or an EMT, or anything, just that you were delivering a heart to a child who needed it. And she doesn't know if you ever made it, if that child lived because you died, or if you delivered it and caught the G-virus and never made it out of Raccoon City, but after all these years, she felt lucky to have loved someone who was a little stupid but a lot kind.
So know I mean it now when I say: I wish I could've known you, Dad. You sounded really cool.
Love,
Aly
