    Hank is in the stable late one evening, milling about and mucking the stalls because he can't sleep. His favorite horse, a friendly bay gelding named Barnaby, is nickering at him from his stall, begging for a treat. Sumo, his dog, a great mutt of supposedly Swiss origin, is snoozing in a pile of hay. It's quiet, and peaceful, and he loses himself in the work and the ambient sounds of creaking wood and snoring animals.

    The stable doors fly open with a deafening bang, scaring the shit out of every man and animal in the room.
