“You’ve played hide and seek before?” Shane asks, only causing Luca to look even more confused.
“Uh, yeah? I think so. You guys wanna…play hide and seek?”
“Kind of. We want to hunt you. We want you to hide from us, while we try to find you. If we find you, we get to keep you. Do whatever we want with you.” Ilya chimes in. “Does that sound fun to you?”
“And if you don’t find me?” Luca smirks, “Do I get to do whatever I want with you?”
“Ha! Sure, Lukasha. We can pretend like this is a possibility.” Ilya laughs, genuinely surprised at his boy’s confidence. He thinks he can stay hidden from Shane and Ilya at their own house? Maybe. He comes over often. But they’re not going to their house. They’re currently on their way to the cottage, where he has never been, and won’t know his way around in the slightest.
“So what, I just hide from you? Like in the house?”
“Well not exactly,” Shane responds, turning back in his seat to look out the windshield as Ilya drives them farther and farther from Ottawa. “We’re going to the cottage.”
“What?” Luca huffs in surprise, leaning over the center console to look at the map dipslayed on the GPS screen.
