Summary
The fully human thing was a habit, albeit a strictly enforced one. Shane had been so young when he’d learned to tuck everything else away that he barely thought about doing it anymore. The thought of showing Ilya had his heart thudding hard enough that he could feel it in his throat.
“I need to tell you something.”
Ilya looked up into his face, giving him his full attention.
“Or, well. There’s something I need to show you. If, um. We’re really going to do this. Forever.”
“Of course we are.” His certainty of it made Shane’s eyes water a little.
“You can’t—” Shane stopped, already hating this. “Just don’t freak out.”
Ilya's brow furrowed, plainly completely fucking lost but willing to follow Shane wherever this was going.
“I can make it go away if it’s too much,” he said. “S’what I usually do.”
Ilya frowned slightly. “Make what go away, lyubimyy?”
There was no way to explain it that wouldn’t make this worse. So, Shane closed his eyes and let go. When he opened his eyes, his leopard’s ears were out.
