Chapter Text
The island appeared on the horizon just after noon.
From the Thousand Sunny's railings, Luffy leaned forward so far that Usopp had to grab the back of his vest to keep him from falling into the sea.
“LAND! I SEE LAND!”
“WE ALL SEE IT, YOU IDIOT!” Nami shouted, smacking him over the head.
“Ow! Nami!”
“Stop trying to throw yourself into the ocean!”
Sanji emerged from the galley carrying a cigarette between his fingers, his other hand resting on his hip. He glanced at the island, then at the captain who was already attempting to climb onto the railings again.
“Oi, marimo. Get your captain before he drowns himself. I refuse to waste perfectly good food on a funeral.”
Zoro, who had been sleeping against the mast, opened one eye.
“Why me?”
“Because ı said so marimo.”
“Wanna say that again, curly-brow?”
“Gladly, moss-head. I said—”
“GUYS!” Luffy interrupted. “CAN WE GO TO THE ISLAND NOW?!”
“No,” Nami answered immediately.
Luffy deflated.
Sanji snorted, turning toward the galley. “Try not to destroy the ship before dinner, you idiots.”
Franky chuckled from the corner.
For a while, everything was normal.
The sea was calm. The sun was warm. Luffy was hungry, Usopp was complaining, Nami was calculating how much money they could potentially make from the island, and Zoro had somehow fallen asleep again despite the shouting.
Sanji watched them from the corner of his eye.
His crew.
His idiots.
His family.
He took a drag from his cigarette and looked away before the thought could settle too deeply.
“Cook-san.” Robin called from the deck. “Would you like to come explore with us?”
He glanced at the island again.
“Tempting, Robin-chan, but someone has to stay behind and make sure these morons don't lose the Sunny.”
“HEY!” several voices protested.
Sanji grinned.
“Besides, someone has to cook for your lovely selves.”
Luffy's eyes lit up.
“MEAT?!”
“Dinner. If you behave.”
“I'LL BE THE BEST-BEHAVED CAPTAIN IN THE WORLD!”
“You said that yesterday and ate the emergency supplies.”
“THAT WAS DIFFERENT!”
Sanji laughed under his breath.
Then he turned away, already thinking about what he would prepare for dinner.
He didn't notice Zoro watching him.
Not that Zoro would have admitted it if he had.
