Bits & Bobs: Bruce Wayne's Family History

Summary:

Chapter one shows the Wayne Family Tree, heavily based on canon events but with some modifications based on my specific au. But people may find it useful for reference.

If I add additional chapters, it would be to provide some history for my version of the Kane family, but most of that's in my head and not written out currently, so I'm not posting it now. I might also add in some details on Dick's family tree stuff.

Chapter 1: Wayne Family Tree

Chapter Text

This is a Wayne Family Tree that I found elsewhere which I used as reference for the different generations of Waynes

<img src="https://i.redd.it/kmedbywc6fly.png" /> ....okay nvm I can't figure out the image embed thing, go look at the link if you want.

I then also went through the character wiki's for the members of the Wayne family to figure out what was feasible for dates and such and how to make things work for my idea of the Wayne family curse, from the witch Annie upon Nathaniel Wayne, causing them to be cursed "until the end of time", causing them to have a single male heir each generation and for general misfortune to befall them.

Most of the following characters are canon, unless they have an asterisk (*) by their name.  Dates are my approximation based on what canon details I could find.

6th century, King Arthur had nephew Sir geVain, entrusted him and descendants with Holy Grail

14th Century: Sir Gaweyne de Weyne, French & Scottish Knight, died in crusades

Early 1600's: various members of the Wayne family came from Scotland to America, most of them working as merchants.

Nathaniel Wayne (1607-1650): Used the alias Malleus as a witchhunter, was cursed by the witch Annie when he burned her at the stake in 1640; met time traveling Bruce Wayne, who used the alias Mordecai

Caleb Wayne* (1641-1700)

Horatio Wayne* (1670-1710): There are no names specified for these generations, but Caleb and Horatio were names given to a second child and his children in the family tree I found, so I am making those family names and using them to fill in the generation gaps.  Notice that they are dying when their child is still underage, an effect of the curse.

Isaac Wayne (1700-1754): I did not find him in the wiki but he was in the family tree I'm using as reference and is most notable for his children.  There were 3 siblings with enough canon details that I did not wish to erase any of them, so I've decided they were triplets, which confused the curse.

Thomas Wayne (1733-1765): Cultist of Barbatos.  He appeared as a villain in DC canon under the alias Simon Hurt.  I've decided that in my version, he went crazy and became a cultist of Barbatos and ended up being a human sacrifice or something and died.  This was an affect of the curse to counteract there being triplets born.

"Mad" Anthony Wayne (1733-1796): Canonically a Revolutionary war general, nicknamed as mad for how he charged in battle.  Never had children or seemed to marry, so I'm headcanoning that he's gay.

Darius Wayne (1733-1783): Revolutionary war hero who burned British ships.  The only one of his siblings to have children, he is Bruce's ancestor.  He was rewarded with a large plot of land, where Wayne Manor was later built.  I headcanon he got a nagging injury from the war which resulted in him dying a few years later and caused much suffering in the meantime.

Charles Wayne (1755-1807): Made him just old enough to have fought in the revolutionary war along with the older generation, which earned him some level of prestige and fortune.  Canonically, he bought a large amount of land, mostly swampland for cheap following the war.  He canonically died of tuberculosis at age 52.

Solomon Wayne (1780-1884): He canonically had a son at an older age and died when he was aged 104.  He was a judge in Gotham and his wife was named Dorothea.  He went to Harvard and was an abolitionist involved in the underground railroad.  In 1840, he was involved in the creation of the infrastructure for the modern Gotham city.

Alan Wayne (1857 -1920): Married Catherine Van Derm, who was a descendant of the Miagani bat tribe.  Founded Wayne Enterprises, including Wayne Shipping & Gotham Railroad.  Was involved in building Gotham infrastructure along with other founding families, including making the bridges.  Was canonically tortured & killed by the Court of Owls after discovering they were real based on anomalies in buildings; it's suspected he was killed by the Talon William Cobb, Dick Grayson's canonical great-grandfather.

Kenneth Wayne (1888-1930): Married a Laura Elizabeth, I've decided that she was a Carnegie.  His mother Catherine canonically died in childbirth.  He founded Wayne Chemical and significantly grew Wayne Enterprises.  He canonically died when his wife was only 37 and she focused on raising their son, so I decided he died when his son was young.  It said his wife did a good job running and growing their company after his death, which is why I decided she came from the Carnegie family, seems like a shrewd business woman.

Patrick Morgan Wayne (1919-1971): He grew up to be an eccentric businessman.  I decided he was probably a bit of a drunk and an asshole capitalist in general.  Created Wayne Tech, which grew during WWII.  His wife was named Constance, I decided to give her the last name Powers (Powers Tech was mentioned as existing somewhere in Gotham in some canon, so he married someone for business connection reasons; her family, the Powers, would be the jerk distant Wayne family members whom Bruce doesn't want to associate with at all since he knows they just want his money.  I've decided, as per the curse and my characterization for Thomas,  that his wife Constance died in childbirth with their second child in 1954, when Thomas Wayne was 8.  Some canon lists Thomas as having a sister Agatha Wayne, so that would have been the name for the little sibling if she hadn't died due to the curse.  Patrick died in a drunk driving car crash which may or may not have actually been a mob hit.

Dr. Thomas Wayne (1946 -1984/1988): He is canonically Bruce's father and was a respected medical doctor/surgeon and known rich philanthropist.  I have so many ideas for his backstory/characterization, the following is all headcanon.  He decided to become a doctor because of his mother's death and he dual-specialized as an OBGYN and as a trauma surgeon.  Was bisexual with a preference for men and kind of had a complex of fearing loving a woman and her dying in childbirth, so he put off marriage with medical school and generally fought with his father a lot.  Had no interest in inheriting his company.  Had an angsty gay love affair with a repressed gay guy a few years younger than him who was going into medical school after they met at a gala; the guy was the son of a wealthy NYC family but his mother was a Kane so he came to a Gotham Gala.  The next summer, Martha Kane finally agreed to attend a debutante at the age of 21, after completing a bachelor's degree in business; she punched a guy who got too handsy with her, which Thomas witnessed and fell in love with her on the spot, because he loves a strong independent woman.  His friend/lover who happens to be Martha's distant cousin ended up chaperoning their dates/wingmaning for Thomas. (I have an entire story in my head with that dynamic that I will most likely never write because it focuses too heavily on an OC)

End of that summer, Thomas was set to go for his residency and he'd decided he wanted to go be a military doctor to get experience with traumatic injuries, which is father was not happy about his only heir deciding to do.  Thomas and Martha got engaged before the end of summer and like Thomas used a sperm bank so that if he died, she could still have his heir to continue the Wayne family line or whatever, at Thomas's father's insistence.  Which, while the public had any evidence, lots of people thought it weird that Thomas was so hesitant about marriage and thought he might be gay and his father did know he had gay proclivities and was pretty homophobic about it, but not outright abusive.  Lots of "I don't care what you do privately, but you better fulfill public expectations and carry forward our family's legacy."  Anyways, lots of letter writing back home while he was away as a soldier in the Vietnam war.  Martha's brother Robert Kane also fought in that war, though he was a highly skilled sniper.  Thomas gave Martha a healthy allowance which she invested very well in many tech companies and stuff; they had fully agreed that Martha would be running Wayne Enterprises while Thomas continued his career as a doctor/surgeon.  Also, Thomas Wayne was a military doctor but was highly dedicated to his sense of pacifism.  Oh also, Thomas and Martha had an agreement while they were away that, as long as they were discrete and used protection against STDs, Thomas could have flings with men and Martha could have flings with women.  She was butch and dressed up as a guy and went by the name Marty, probably bigender.

Alfred was doing his MI6 spy stuff and ended up in a plane that got shot down, though he survived it.  Thomas rescued him and nursed him back to health and basically gained Alfred's lifelong devotion.  Patrick Wayne complained about the danger his son was in and he got transferred to the navy, since a ship was safer than a battlefield.  Thomas was very passionate about preventing the spread of infectious disease including STD's and was like, we are handing out condoms to the soldiers.  I know you hate gay soldiers but I don't care if they fool around in the long months away from women as long as they are safe from infectious disease.  Him spreading that policy helped reduce the spread of HIV compared to the IRL AIDS epidemic.  Thomas and Martha would write to eachother in coded flower drawings because they were weird nerds and Alfred with his spy stuff and reading letters was quite interested in this.  Alfred kind of manipulated things with his superiors to be allowed to stay with Thomas.  Then, Patrick Wayne died in 1970 and Thomas was required to go home, as the heir of such an important company.  Alfred went back to his spy stuff for a bit but said they would meet again, Thomas invited Alfred to his wedding to Martha, saying she would adore him.

Alfred wrapped up his spy stuff and was officially a butler and snuck in with the waitstaff at Thomas and Martha's wedding, having resigned his former position, he easily slid into the role of the Wayne Family's butler.  Pennywaynes poly triad for the win....in this case, it was partially because Thomas was too gay to be good at topping a woman so having a third facilitated things.  Anyways, Thomas was very accomplished doctor and ended up being on the forefront of combating the AIDS Epidemic, speaking up on behalf of this marginalized community from his position of relative privilege as someone presumed straight with wife and child.  Leslie went through her residency under him and was also involved.

Anyways....

Martha Kane Wayne (1949-1984/1988): She was competent badass businesswoman and stuff as specified before.  They died start of November in a presidential election year, they were outspoken against the Reagan administration.  The 1984/1988 is due to timeline/multiversal fluctuations, because Dick and Bruce were orphaned at the same age, but Dick's timeline is fluctuating between being orphaned at age 8 vs 12.

Bruce Thomas Wayne (1976 - Present): The Batman, you know him, I don't need to elaborate.
