Chapter 1: School Pick-Up

Summary:

Wesley goes to pick Jack up from school.. It doesn't go as smoothly as he anticipated

Chapter Text

Wesley had just pulled up to Jack's school. He's had a long stressful day at work. Angela had been working late for around two weeks now - the station was short-staffed and everyone had to work overtime. Wesley didn't want her worrying about it or feeling bad, so was trying to maintain being the 'perfect' husband. He walked over to where the parents were waiting for the kids. The doors would open in a few minutes and Jack would come running out. As Wesley got there, he couldn't help but overhear the conversation the couple to his left were having.

"That's exactly what I'm talking about. See here, Angela hasn't been in weeks to pick Jack up.. It's parents like her that are to blame" The man said to his wife.

Wesley stiffened. He contemplated saying something, but Jack would be out in a minute.

"I mean, if you're going to have kids, at least be present in their lives" The man continued.

"Excuse me" Wesley had to say something. "I couldn't help but over hear your conversation.. Who are we talking about?" He tried to be polite.

"If you over heard, you should know"

"I don't appreciate you talking about my wife" Wesley eyed the man he now recognised as Connor's father, Robert - Connor was Jack's friend in school.

"I'm making a point" Robert shrugged.

"Daddy!" Jack ran over to Wesley.

"Hey, buddy" Wesley ruffled Jack's hair and briefly looked towards him. "Well please make the point without Angela's name" He turned his attention back to Robert.

"I'll make the point however I want to" Robert took a step forward.

Wesley really didn't want to make a scene, but he wasn't going to let this man get away with bad mouthing Angela.

"Now, as I was saying.." Robert turned back to his wife. "Children need stable parents, who show up"

"Ok, that's it" Wesley stepped forward. "What's your problem?"

"My problem is, parents. Some of them, like your wife, think their kids aren't worth their time"

"Angela is always there for Jack. You have no right to talk about her" Wesley frowned, getting angry now.

"Well, where's she been for the last two weeks?" Robert had a smug look on his face. "That's right, busy with work. What kind of mother puts work over her child?"

"I'd watch what you say next" Wesley could feel the heat rising in his body.

"And not to mention, she's a police officer. She's surrounded by all sorts of violence and crime" Robert sighed. "All I'm saying is, I wouldn't want a woman like that anywhere near my son"

That was it. Wesley wasn't exactly sure what happened, but his hand collided with Robert's face and knocked him to the ground.

There were several gasps from parents witnessing the scene. The chatter died down and all eyes were on them. Jack looked at Robert on the floor, then up at his dad.

"YOU PUNCHED ME!" Robert complained, clutching his bleeding nose.

Wesley was breathing hard, his fisted hand by his side now. "I did tell you to watch what you said next"

"Daddy you won!" Jack smiled.

"What's going on?" A teacher came over to the scene. "Oh my god!"

"He hit my husband" Robert's wife pointed to Wesley. "He punched him in the face!"

"Ok, everyone calm down" The teacher controlled the situation.

"I'm calling the police!" Robert pulled his phone out and did just that.

"Mr Evers, if you could just wait over there, I think we should let the police arrive" The teacher told him.

"Right" Wesley ran a hand through his hair.

He and Jack went to where the teacher had instructed him to wait. The adrenaline was finally wearing off and he glanced down at his knuckles. They were already starting to bruise. "Sorry about that, Jack" Wesley knelt down so he was level with his son.

"What happened?" Jack asked. "Is it because he said Mom was a bad Mommy?"

"Don't worry about that" Wesley shook his head.

"I heard him.." Jack said, quietly.

"Jack.. Listen to me" Wesley spoke slowly. "Your mother is amazing. She's the best mom I know, and she loves you very much"

"I know" Jack nodded.

"Ok then" Wesley planted a quick kiss in his hair.

"And she always comes to my soccer games!" Jack smiled.

"She does" Wesley smiled too.

"The cops are on the way!" Robert shouted, still on the floor.

Wesley sighed. He knew he shouldn't have punched him. But in his defence, it was a reflex. He hadn't even realised what he'd hit Robert.

"Did you hear me?! Robert shouted again.

"Mr Evans, please calm down" The teacher said to him.

"I'll calm down when that man is arrested"

"Is mommy going to arrest you?" Jack asked.

"No" Wesley assured him, wondering if he should call Angela and explain what had happened. Before he could though, a shop pulled up, and two officers stepped out.
