this quadrumvirate's a public safety hazard

Summary:

rui kamishiro and mako yabuki, mizuki akiyama and ena shinonome. they're a package deal. you cannot take one and the other. somehow, they'll always be intertwined.

rui goes to unnecessary lengths to shower his girlfriend with affection. mako is too immersed in her fish tank to give one, two, red and blue flying fucks. mizuki takes every bad group decision and shoves it to rock-bottom bad, every single time. ena may as well just kill herself already.

this is what we call the quadrumvirate. albeit a strange blend, they work. somehow.

(this may be out of character, so sorry! given that this is done more for my pleasure than anything, i may not take as much time to ensure the characters act as how they do in canon. rui especially since he's feeding my romantic escapades than fulfilling his role as the genius inventor. apologies again!)

Notes:

mako is very sleepy and rui is very much charmed by this behaviour. this will be a recurring thing.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: When Evening Takes Over

Chapter Text

The sun had just begun to settle when Mako lost her motivation from earlier to draw. Night hadn't come just yet, but her eyelids got the better of her.

Her stylus slipped from her hand to the floor.

An hour passed when Rui found her asleep on her desk. He poked her cheek.

“Mako?”

Nothing.

A heartbeat later, her head tilted closer to his touch, a tired noise escaping her lips.

“There you are.”

His hand moved to ruffle her hair. She remained silent, save for light snoring. Rui smiled, letting out a breathy laugh.

“Dinner can wait, then, I presume?”

A grumble.

“My, my, someone's cherishing her rest. I'll leave you be, then.”

He pressed a kiss to her temple. In a blur, he’d already closed the door.

Only several minutes later did Mako blink and regain consciousness, vision hazy.

“...you could’ve stayed,” she murmured, more to herself than anything.

Alas, she fell victim to her exhaustion once more.
