Several weeks after the Battle of the Five Armies, the Dwarves were still exploring the vastity of the treasure under the mountain.
That day Thorin has been called urgently because, according to Ori, they have found a gem that's different from any other they've ever seen.
When Thorin arrived he found Kili, Fili, Bofur and Balin looking fixedly at something.
He joined them and saw the strange object. It actually kind of looked like a gem, but it was too big, three or four times the Arkenstone. It had an oval shape that slightly shrank at one side. It was an iridescent mixture of yellow, orange and red. If it was caught by the light it looked like it was on fire.
“It's not a gem,” said Thorin. He had never seen something like that before, and yet he could guess its true nature: “It's a dragon egg.”
“What?!?” everyone was astonished by the news, but they reacted in different ways.
“So…” said Bofur: “This means that Smaug was a… lady dragon?”
“What are we doing with it?” asked Balin, very worried.
Fili and Kili looked at their uncle with pleading eyes, and said in unison: “Can we keep it?”
