Spiders

Summary:

Joy hates spiders. Fortunately, she has her wife to protect her

Work Text:

Joy finishes washing the dishes from dinner, putting the last one in the drying rack to deal with later. Emma had cooked a delicious dinner for them. Joy has many skills, but cooking is really not among them. She is, however, very willing to do the dishes and cleaning afterwards. It works. It's the kind of house she wants to bring a child into. She smiles to herself as she hovers a hand over her flat stomach. Nothing is showing yet, it's still far too early, but she has the positive pregnancy tests to prove that it is real. Emma is overjoyed, and really it had been a battle to even get her wife to allow her to do the dishes. But she's pregnant, not an invalid! She can do the dishes, especially since her work as a radiology attending is not as physically taxing as Emma's as an ED nurse.

She goes to grab a towel to dry her hands, humming to herself. Emma is relaxing in their living room, picking a movie for them to watch before they wind down for the night and head to bed. She glances at the space the towel had just been hanging and shrieks so loud the whole neighborhood must have heard her. There, on the cabinet, right where the towel had been, is a fat spider. She hates spiders. She can tolerate most bugs, but spiders? Not a chance. She drops the towel in panic, just as Emma comes racing around the corner.

"Joy! Honey! Is everything okay???" Emma yells desperately. She reaches Joy and immediately, almost unconsciously, starts checking her wife over. Joy can feel the practiced care in her hands as they move across her body.

"Spider, on the cabinet," Joy whimpers.

"Oh, I see it," says Emma. She carefully, quietly, rips a paper towel off the roll next to the sink and folds it over. She moves lightning fast and squishes it. She shows the guts to Joy, who makes a face and shudders.

"Get rid of it, ewwwww!"

"There we go, all gone." Emma drops the paper towel into the garbage and then goes to wash her hands. Joy picks up the towel, finally catching her breath. "You okay?" Emma asks.

"Yeah, I'm fine," she answers.

"Good." Emma folds Joy into her arms for a moment, and the pressure immediately helps Joy chill back out. She always needs some comfort after seeing a spider.

"Thank you, my hero," Joy says teasingly to Emma, tilting her head up.

"Yours," agrees Emma with a smile and a quick kiss.
