Trinity wakes slowly and luxuriously. She can feel someone else in the bed, and she's fairly sure it's not her own. She doesn't remember, but she must have gone out last night, picked up a wealthy girl, and gone to her place. The girl hums a little and snuggles in closer, wrapping her arms around Trinity. It's kind of nice to be the little spoon here. She's always preferred it, but it's not the norm in her hookups so she takes the moment to enjoy it.
"Mmm good morning Trin," says the woman, propping herself up to give her a kiss on the cheek. "I'm glad you're off on a Saturday, finally. Maybe we can take the kids to the park."
"Maybe," Trinity hums in reply. Her eyes fly open as she processes what her bedmate said. Kids? She peeks under the covers and looks down at her body. Fully clothed. So is the woman beside her, and something tells her they didn't get dressed in pajamas after a wild night. Her heart hammers in her chest as she slowly turns over to look at the woman in bed with her. Oh. She's pretty. Exactly Trinity's type, if she's perfectly honest. Dark, curly hair, dark eyes, a glimmer of mischief in her eyes, it's everything that Trinity has always been attracted to. And worse, she looks vaguely familiar, like Trinity's seen her before but can't remember where.
"Come on honey, we should get out of bed, get the kids ready, maybe you can make pancakes for us?"
"Pancakes?" Trinity repeats dumbly.
"Yeah, you know, chocolate chip for Gabri and Raf, blueberry for you and me?"
"What's—" Trinity croaks, then licks her lips to try again, "what's your name?"
The woman sits back from her. "Abby. I'm your wife? We have two beautiful children in the next room? Sweetheart, what's going on?"
"I don't have a wife. I don't have anyone. What's going on? Is this an elaborate prank?" Trinity desperately shoots up and out of the bed, looking around for something, anything that she recognizes. She can see the crucifix her lola gave her on the vanity, along with the earrings she's worn every day since receiving them as a gift for graduating college and what looks like a wedding ring. "Oh my God," she moans as she hurls herself back down on the bed and screws her eyes shut. "Oh my God."
"Trin?" Abby's hands hover over Trinity's body anxiously. "Are you okay, my love?"
Trinity's eyes pop back open. "Oh my God, you're Abby Langdon. You're Langdon's wife."
Abby stares at her, baffled. "No," she says slowly, "I'm Abby Santos. I'm married to you, Trinity Santos. We married on a whim right after college, against my parents' wishes. They came around when I gave birth to Rafael your final year of med school." Trinity's eye snap to her. "IVF," Abby adds. "We didn't want to wait anymore. Do you really not remember any of this?" Trinity shakes her head. "And you think I'm married to the bratty little resident, Frank Langdon? From last year? You complained ad nauseam about him! Why would I marry him?"
"I don't know!" Trinity buries her face in her hands. "None of this makes any sense!"
Abby takes a deep breath. "Okay. Okay, I understand that you've had a bad dream and think you slipped through the multiverse or something. But right now you have kids in the other room who call you mama. And we have to feed and care for them. Whatever's going on here is going to have to wait, okay? Can you do that?"
Trinity nods obediently. "I can do that," she says, voice croaking.
"Good. Then you go out and make breakfast and I'll—" Abby cuts off at the pitter-patter of little feet.
"Mommy, mommy! Mama!" A little five year old boy comes crashing into the room, followed hot on his heels by a toddler girl, both calling for parents. They scramble on the bed and the boy throws himself into Abby's arms, while the girl immediately snuggles into Trinity's arms and lays her head on Trinity's shoulder.
"Mama I miss you," says the little girl, her voice a little muffled from being buried in Trinity's neck. Abby glares at her, so Trinity thinks fast.
"Well I'm right here now, sweetie." She curls her arms tighter around the girl, who then somehow snuggles in deeper.
"You happy to see Mama, Gabri? Raf?" Abby asks. The kids respond with what can only be described as a cacophony of sound that presumably means yes. "Okay, why don't you let Mama up so she can make something for breakfast?"
Trinity remembers what Abby had said earlier and decides to play along. "I can make pancakes for everyone! Chocolate chip for two little, ummm munchkins maybe?"
"We're not doughnuts, silly!" says the boy, who must be Raf. Trinity feels a pang at that. The same name as her baby brother.
"No?" says Trinity. "I guess only pancakes for me and mommy then."
"Nooooooooo!" shrieks the little girl, who must be Gabri. "Pancakes please mama!"
"Okay, I can make some." The little girl won't let go when Trinity goes to get up though, and Abby looks anxiously at the little girl's iron grip on Trinity's shirt.
"I'm sorry, Trin, she's going through a Velcro stage and you worked crazy hours this past week. She's barely seen you."
"It's okay," says Trinity, "she can be my sous chef, right?" Gabri nods enthusiastically. "Alright then, let's get started!"
She lets Gabri guide her out to the kitchen and finds that everything is exactly where she would have put them. As she pulls things out to start on the counter, she has a moment where she thinks maybe she should just consider this a gift from the universe. A gorgeous wife, cute kids, the kind of home she always dreamed of, how bad would it be to just stay? She shouldn't go there, but who would it really hurt?
"Mama!" calls Gabri, startling Trinity out of her thoughts.
"Yeah, baby?"
"I fwip?" Her little face is almost earnest, even.
Trinity laughs and reaches over to ruffle her hair. "You know you're not big enough yet. Do you want to crack the egg though?"
"Yeah!!!!" Gabri squeals.
Trinity feels overwhelmingly happy and domestic. She could get used to this. Fuck Langdon, he doesn't deserve this. But she could.
