The rain hit the glass in uneven sheets casting blurry streaks of neon light across the floor of Josh’s room. Inside the space smelled like vanilla tea, stale incense and damp denim.
Josh was sitting cross-legged on the floor tossing an apple from hand to hand while a battered cassette player hissed out a soft melancholic post-punk track. Tyler sat on the edge of the mattress against the wall perfectly motionless watching the pattern of raindrops race down the window pane.
"You don't have to sit far away, " Josh said, breaking the quiet. He caught the apple one time and set it down on the rug. "It’s not like you’re going to melt. Unless the rain does that to vampires now?"
Tyler turned his head slowly, an amused twitch pulling at the corner of his dark mouth. "Water is fine " he said, his voice soft against the rumble of thunder outside. "I’m just... Giving you space. After earlier."
Josh snorted, pulling his knees up toward his chest. "Earlier it was fine. You caught a collapsing iron beam with one hand. Tossed a weirdly aggressive stray dog into a dumpster. Standard Tuesday."
"It wasn't a dog, " Tyler corrected gently, his pale eyes narrowing slightly as he looked at Josh. ". You were shaking."
"I was cold " Josh insisted, though he knew it was a lie. He rubbed his hands over his arms, where the chill from the abandoned warehouse still clung to his skin.
Tyler didn't argue. Instead he slid down from the mattress moving with that silent fluidness that always made Josh's pulse skip a beat. He crossed the room and sank down onto the rug opposite Josh keeping a deliberate foot of distance between them.
"You're brave Josh " Tyler said softly looking down at his hands—pale, long-fingered and perfectly still. "Too brave. You walk into those hollowed-out places like nothing in the dark can touch you."
"Nothing can, " Josh murmured, leaning his chin on his knees. He looked up at Tyler through a fringe of hair. "I’ve got you don't I?"
Tyler raised his eyes. In the dim lamp light they held a quiet gravity. "I can protect you from what hides in the ruins " he said, ". You forget what I am."
"I don't forget, " Josh replied. He reached out, closing the distance between them and laid his palm flat against the back of Tyler’s cold hand.
Tyler froze at the touch, his chest not rising or falling suspended in the stillness.
Josh didn't pull away. He squeezed slightly, feeling the stone-like texture of Tyler's skin contrast sharply with his own body heat. "You're cold " Josh whispered, a smile touching his lips. "Dramatic… You're not going to hurt me."
Tyler let out a breath he didn't technically need his fingers unfurling slightly to let Josh’s hand rest against his. "You're entirely too trusting."
"Or maybe you're a softie " Josh teased, though his heart was hammering against his ribs in a way that had nothing to do with fear.
Tyler shifted closer, his shoulder brushing against Josh's. The ambient chill radiating off him felt refreshing in the warm room. "Don't let the local coven hear you say that " Tyler murmured, a smile finally breaking across his face. "I have a reputation to maintain."
"Your secret's safe with me " Josh said, leaning back against the side of the bed content to sit in the dark while the storm raged outside.
Soon the rain outside gathered into a rhythmic rhythm against the glass filling the small room with a muted silver-gray gloom. The soft hiss of the cassette deck had run out of tape leaving the sound of water rushing down the gutters and the low steady thrum of Josh’s breathing.
Josh was still looking at Tyler, his thumb lightly stroking the back of Tyler’s knuckles. He expected Tyler to make a joke or pull back to maintain that cautious distance he always tried to keep.
Instead Tyler turned his wrist catching Josh’s hand in his cold fingers.
Before Josh could process the shift in pressure Tyler leaned forward. He moved with the effortless speed that belonged entirely to his nature, a dark fluid motion that closed the space between them in an instant.
His lips met Josh’s in a gentle kiss.
For a fraction of a second everything seemed to stop. Tyler’s touch was cool, like cool river stone or air on an October morning but the contrast against Josh’s warm skin sent a sudden tingling rush straight down Josh’s spine. It was light, fleeting and careful—an answer to all the unspoken trust Josh had given him throughout the night.
When Tyler pulled back he didn't retreat far. He stayed close enough that Josh could feel the chill air radiating from him, his pale eyes searching Josh’s face with a rare open vulnerability.
"You..." Josh started, his voice dropping an octave completely caught off guard. He blinked, a flush spreading across his cheeks that had nothing to do with the room's temperature.
Tyler offered a crooked smile, the sharp edge of a fang just catching the faint amber light of the streetlamp outside. "You talk a lot when you're trying to prove you're not scared " Tyler murmured softly though his fingers tightened gently around Josh’s.
Josh let out a breathy laugh leaning his head back against the side of the bed. "Okay, point," he whispered, his thumb brushing over Tyler's knuckles again, his pulse still hammering against his ribs. "You can do that to quiet me down whenever you want."
The rain was coming down now drumming against the glass in a rhythmic comforting pattern that made the small room feel like the only place in the world. The faint amber light from the streetlamp outside cast shadows across the floorboards.
Josh leaned his head back against the edge of the mattress, his dark hair messy, his gaze fixed on Tyler. Sitting next to him Tyler looked like a sculpture carved out of marble—stark, beautiful and motionless.
"You know " Josh began softly, his voice cutting through the roar of the storm. "When I first got into the goth scene it was all about the drama of it. The music, the coats, the dark poetry. It was a way to feel connected to something quiet and hidden."
Tyler turned his head slowly, his pale eyes catching the light. "And now?"
"Now I'm sitting next to the thing, " Josh said, a small genuine smile touching his lips. ". It's not dark or scary at all. It's just... You."
Josh shifted closer, turning his body toward Tyler on the rug. He reached out his warm hand settling over Tyler's fingers.
"I spend much time pretending to be unflappable, " Josh admitted quietly, his eyes searching Tyler's face. "Acting like nothing gets to me like I belong in every abandoned hollowed-out building we walk into.. With you I don't have to put on a show. I know you see through it."
Tyler squeezed Josh's hand gently, his thumb tracing the skin of Josh's wrist. "You don't need to prove anything to me Josh. You're stronger than you give yourself credit for."
"I know, " Josh whispered. "That's why I want this. It's not about the thrill or the bite itself. It's about how much I trust you. Everyone else in my life sees the eyeliner and the clothes. They think it's a phase or a mask.. You actually know me. Giving you that kind of power... Letting you close like that... It's the best feeling I've ever felt."
Tyler's expression softened, the guarded stillness melting away into something tender and deeply reverent. He lifted his hand, his cool fingertips lightly brushing against Josh's cheek tracing down along his jawline to the side of his neck.
"Josh " Tyler murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Are you absolutely sure? Once I do this it seals a bond between us. It's not something I take lightly."
Josh leaned his head into Tyler's touch, closing his eyes for a moment before opening them again steady and resolute. "I'm sure. I want to share this with you Tyler. Completely."
Tyler took a steady breath moving with deliberate gentle care. He slid one arm around Josh's back drawing him in until their chests were nearly touching offering support. Josh tipped his head back, opening up the line of his throat, his breath hitching slightly in anticipation as Tyler leaned down his cool breath brushing against Josh's collarbone.
"Tyler " Josh murmured, his voice, above a whisper. He reached up his warm hand resting gently against the side of Tyler’s neck. "Look at me."
Tyler tilted his head, his eyes looking closely at Josh's face with great care. The usual quiet and reserved way he stood changed into something real. "Are you sure Josh?" Tyler asked, his voice quiet and calm. "There's no going once we do this."
"I'm sure, " Josh said gently without any hesitation. "I trust you."
Tyler took a breath letting out a small sigh as he moved closer. He didn't hurry. His actions were very gentle as his fingers touched the hair on Josh's neck, his hand feeling cool against Josh's warm red skin.
Josh tilted his head a little, giving his neck his heart beating fast where Tyler's hand was. He felt the cold air come in as Tyler moved close, placing a comforting kiss on his collarbone first—a quiet promise before the change.
When Tyler's fangs touched skin Josh let out a sharp sound, his hands automatically holding onto the fabric of Tyler's velvet jacket. It wasn't hurt—it was a sudden feeling of cold that seemed to make everything else in the room go quiet. The sound of the rain disappeared as a warm feeling filled him, holding him completely to Tyler.
Tyler held him tightly, his arm around Josh's waist to keep him close and safe as time passed. Every action was careful, slow and matched the rhythm of Josh's breathing.
When Tyler finally pulled away he put his forehead against Josh's keeping his arm around him. Josh blinked slowly feeling a little dizzy but completely calm, a quiet smile on his lips in the dark room.
"See?" Josh said in a whisper, his hand on Tyler's heart. "Told you I trusted you."
Tyler let out a low laugh, placing another soft kiss on Josh's temple. "You're amazing, Josh."
