cj2017 and feroxargentea, publishers of The X-Files fanzine Dreaming the Answers, are importing the zine’s fanworks to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

Background explanation

Dreaming the Answers (DTA) was a 33-issue The X-Files fanzine published from November 1997 to March 2001. The zine featured primarily Mulder/Scully fic with additional meta, reviews, and news of note. The publishers are still proud of Dreaming the Answers, and they’d like to make it freely available and preserve any of its fanfic that isn’t yet archived. For more information, refer to Dreaming the Answers’ Fanlore page and AO3 collection.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s AO3 Fanzine Scan Hosting Project (FSHP) is to assist publishers of fanzines to incorporate the fanworks from those fanzines into the Archive of Our Own. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with publishers who want to import their fanzines and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with cj2017 and feroxargentea to import the fanzines listed above into separate, searchable collections on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the fanzines in their entirety, all art in the fanzines will be hosted on the OTW's servers and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

We will begin importing works from cj2017 and feroxargentea’s fanzines to the AO3 after November. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the task. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collections in the meantime.

What does this mean for creators who had work(s) in Dreaming the Answers?

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will add it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors.

Please contact Open Doors with your creator pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

1. You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than the publisher has a record of.
2. You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
3. You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).

The Pinky and the Brain Page, a Pinky and the Brain fanfiction and fanart archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

Background explanation

James, the archivist, used to run and maintain a Pinky and the Brain fandom site from around 1995 to 2000. When he recently found some of the stories in an old hard drive he searched the Internet for some of them, but his searches came up empty. Rather than letting those stories sit unread he thought he would rather they be shared on the AO3 for people to enjoy and remember.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with James to import The Pinky and the Brain Page into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanfics and fanart currently in the The Pinky and the Brain Page will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

Forging Ghost, a Spike/Angel fanfiction archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

Background explanation

Forging Ghost was a Yahoo! Group dedicated to fanfiction for Spike/Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel: the Series. Ghostsforge, the moderator, preserved Forging Ghost when Yahoo! Groups was shut down in 2019 and asked Open Doors for assistance in importing its works to AO3.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. Faerie, a Tolkien fanfiction archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

Background explanation

Faerie: Tolkien fanfiction was an archive founded by Esteliel in 2011 and run with the help of mods Narya and Spiced_Wine. The site welcomed all sorts of stories, poetry and non-fiction writing, regardless of genre, rating or pairing. Due to unforeseen circumstances the site owner could no longer maintain it and the site was taken offline sometime in 2021. As a result and in order to keep the stories available to the fandom, the mods Narya and Spiced_Wine decided to move the archive to the AO3 as part of the Open Doors project.

Absolution - The Inugrrrl Memorial, an InuYasha fanfiction memorial archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

Inugrrrl was a longtime fan and fanfiction writer of InuYasha and the InuYasha/Kagome pairing. In her own words, she was known for “writing characterization-breaking, smut-filled, angst-riddled, alternate universe pulp fiction without a hint of shame, regret, or apology.” She was active in the fanbase from 2005-2024. Inugrrrl tragically passed away in June of 2024 and her daughter wished for her mother’s fanworks to remain online for the fanbase to enjoy.

Open Doors will be working with Rinikioi, Inugrrrl’s best friend, to import her personal archive, Absolution, into a separate memorial account on the Archive of Our Own.

We will begin importing works by Inugrrrl to the AO3 after May. You will find them on the inugrrrl_memorial account.

Inugrrrl also had a collection of fanfiction gifted to her by friends and fellow fans. Open Doors will be importing these works into a separate collection.

What does this mean for creators who wrote fic for Inugrrrl?

We're honored to be able to help preserve the works of Inugrrrl, and while we mourn her loss, we also realize that we are fortunate that she had a friend who was given permission to collect and preserve her works on the AO3 so that they will not be lost. Thinking about the death of a fandom friend may be difficult, but it can also be an opportunity to consider what will happen to your fanworks and accounts and those of your friends after your deaths. The Archive of Our Own has an option to name a Fannish Next of Kin, someone who would be able to gain access to your accounts in the case of your death or incapacitation. By naming someone who can act on your behalf, you can decide ahead of time how you want your AO3 accounts handled going into the future.

Homosapien Press, publisher of multi-fandom fanzines including Samurai Errant, Homosapien, and Pure Maple Syrup, is importing the zines’ fanworks to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

Background explanation

Homosapien Press was based in Australia and run by Julie Bozza, publishing various fanzines from 1988 to 2004. Julie is keen to preserve this part of fandom history, with the explicit permission of the creators.

Spockanalia (1967-1970) was the very first all-Star Trek fanzine ever published, and Masiform D (1971-1998) was the longest running Star Trek fanzine, so Open Doors is delighted to be preserving these fanzines’ works as part of the AO3 Fanzine Scan Hosting Project (FSHP).

The Common People Warehouse

The Common People (TCP) was a genre of Marvel Comics fanfiction created by Kielle and Phil Foster and focusing on the ordinary people of the Marvel universe.

The Disney Kink Meme

Completed: May 2024

The Disney Kink Meme was originally hosted on LiveJournal, and then moved to Dreamwidth. Participation on Dreamwidth, however, tapered off significantly, so the moderators wanted to move the prompt meme to a more active location with a long-term future.

The close-knit microfandom for "9" began creating fanworks a few months before the film's release in September 2009. There is now over a decade of fanfiction and fanart posted to The 9 Forum, which we wanted to preserve, anticipating that the message board software will not last forever.

West of the Moon

Completed: September 2024

West of the Moon is a Lord of the Rings archive with gen and slash fan fiction, poetry, and filk. The archive was “frozen in time” on February 18th, 2008 – almost 5 years to the day from its birth. The original site is no longer online, but its moderators wanted to preserve all of these amazing works!

Elysejský klíč

Completed: December 2024

Elysejský klíč was a Czech-language Harry Potter fanfiction and fanart archive created in 2010 and maintained since then by Alice O’Really. Alice wanted to preserve her fanfiction of the same title and also the work of fans who created content inspired by Elysejský klíč.

VinXperience

Completed: December 2024

For almost two decades, the VinXperience web site and message board provided a second home for fans of actor Vin Diesel. More than a thousand stories - fanfic, original fiction, group writing projects, and poetry - were housed at the VX message board. VinXperience officially closed its message board in 2017, but the many works of fiction will remain available through the AO3 archive.

Between the Lines

Completed: December 2024

Originally founded in 2002 by Lora_8664 as a home of JAG fanfiction, it was active for almost a decade before it went silent in 2008. In 2020, ivedonestranger resurrected it as the successor admin and has kept it preserved for future generations.

Smoochies

Smoochies was a site dedicated to bishounen, shounen-ai and yaoi fanworks. It ran from late 1997 to early 2003. During its life, it hosted some amazing works that its moderator, Melanie, didn’t want to see lost.

All About Spike

Completed: December 2024

All About Spike, a large selective Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel archive for fanfiction and essays about the character Spike, was founded in July 2002 by drinkthehalo. The archive focuses on fanfiction that explores the ambiguities of Spike's character with an eye toward his redemption.
