Chapter 5: EPILOGUE

Chapter Text

Hot weather always called for picnics outside to catch some fresh air. And on days Mr. Hatake didn’t work, it called for a reading session after eating.

They were currently enjoying the view from under Kakashi’s favorite tree at Donwell, the pair of them too deep into their books to notice anything else.

A pair of tiny dirty hands pulled Iruka’s book down trying to gain his attention.

“Naruto, weren’t you playing around with Sasuke?” Kakashi asked, because he knew Iruka hated being interrupted while he read.

“I wanted to show you the worms we found,” the little boy smiled as bright as the sun.

“Leave them in your father’s lap and we’ll watch them for you while you play,” Kakashi suggested.

“Hey! I’m still listening.” Iruka complained and gave Kakashi’s shoulder a playfully weak shove from where he laid on the man’s chest. “Naruto, go ask aunt Anko for a jar so you can give the worms a home and then we’ll watch them for you, alright?”

Naruto laughed devilishly and put the worms in Kakashi’s shoulder instead.

Iruka sat up in one move and laughed along with Naruto as Kakashi brushed the little things off with little to no effort.

“Not funny,” he stated.

“You’re right. We shouldn’t do that, Naruto.” Iruka pulled a straight face.

“But you were laughing as well, dad,” Naruto pouted.

“Oh, he was laughing as well?” Kakashi asked, and then put on a smirk as he tickled Iruka mercilessly.

Iruka laughed loudly as he tried to fend Kakashi off, and Naruto threw himself up onto Kakashi’s back to be a part of the moment.

Only when the little kid fell into Iruka did Kakashi stop, and the three of them rested from their laughter in each other’s arms.

“Naruto, my dad said your uncle Asuma arrived with your aunt Kurenai and the baby. Do you want to go find frogs in the pond?” Sasuke interrupted them with an unamused face.

“Yes,” Naruto answered, and stood back up hurriedly before running down the hill with Sasuke.

Iruka and Kakashi remained on their place in the ground, catching their breaths and feeling each other’s fast-beating hearts.

“Your brother’s here. You should go greet them while I go back to helping Mr. Morino,” Kakashi said, but made no movement to stand up.

Iruka didn’t move either.

Iruka.

“Alright. But if you don’t get off me I won’t ever be able to get up,” Iruka complained.

Kakashi sat up and moved his mask down to give Iruka a good kiss before going back to helping Ibiki and Tenzou.

Iruka had found in Kakashi the perfect reading partner, and while he still had to teach Naruto to read so he could join them—he had a certain feeling he wouldn't be the kind of undistracting company Iruka wanted. Still, he loved everyone in his family, without any care if they distracted him or not. Sometimes distractions brought with them good memories to look back on, so Iruka wasn’t really all that bothered.
