Chapter Text
As the car pulled up to the entrance, Wilbur felt the familiar rattle of the wheels against the gravel path. As the familiar hills and trees came into sight, Wilbur couldn’t but roll down the window and breathe in the fresh warm summer air. It was just as he remembered it, but somehow more real and vivid than the last time he’d seen it nearly a year ago.
Phil sat in the driver's seat, pulling into the parking lot. Wilbur could see a figure waiting outside the office, and even without his glasses he knew exactly who it was. Before the car had even come to a full stop, Wilbur was out the door and racing into the arms of the person he’d been longing to see.
“Wilbur!” Quackity breathed out, returning to embrace. Wilbur fit perfectly into his arms, feeling safer than he had felt in months.
“So you’re this Quackity I’ve been hearing so much about?” Phil asked, coming up behind Wilbur.
“Oh yeah-” Quackity said, “Uh, Mr Minecraft I’m Q- I’m uh, your son’s uhhh-”
“This is the boy, yeah.” Wilbur said, saving Quackity from having to finish his sentence.
“Nice to finally meet you.” Phil said, “Great to see my son with a boy from Camp Dream.”
“Uhh yeah, I mean I’m glad you think so.” Quackity said.
“Wilbur tells me you just graduated with a political science degree.”
“Yeah,” Quackity said, “Wilbur helped a lot with learning some of the harder stuff before finals.”
“That’s my boy.” Phil said, patting Wilbur on the back, “Well I’m going to check in with Karl, I’ll give you some time to catch up, but I’d love to talk more later.”
“You too, I mean, uh, thanks.” Quackity said quickly.
“You good?” Wilbur asked with amusement.
“I was just very nervous to meet your dad.” Quackity confessed, “I mean, I need to prove myself worthy of dating his son.”
“I know that Phil will love you.” Wilbur said, “He loves everyone here, and how could anyone not love you?”
“Oh you stop it-” Quackity said with flustered joy.
“Now, I heard a rumor that one of our campers is on staff now.” Wilbur said, “Tell me everything.”
“Three actually!” Quackity said, “Eret, Jack, and Foolish are all CITs this summer.”
“Dang, we did good.” Wilbur said, pulling Quackity in for a side hug, “Me and my bro.”
“Just a couple of dudes being dudes.” Quackity said without missing a beat.
“Have you heard from any of the others?” Wilbur asked.
“Yes! Tommy and Fundy are in a group together, and Connor is in another group. Tubbo and Ranboo are here for a couple weeks but couldn’t swing the whole summer this year.”
“Wow, that’s amazing.” Wilbur said, “Can’t wait to see them again.”
“Tommy was so happy when he saw me, I bet he’d be even more excited to see you.”
“Nah, you were the fun counselor, I was the emotionally unstable one who dealt with my repressed feelings by starting imaginary wars.”
“Exactly. That kid practically idolized you.” Quackoty said, “At lunch today I bet you he’ll knock you down with a hug.”
“I’d like to see him try.” Wilbur laughed.
“Are you counseling this week?” Quackity asked.
“No, covering support staff duties, and they’re putting Phil on kitchen I believe.”
“You better visit me.” Quackity said, “We’re in the fire circle back behind Cabin 12.”
“Only if you feed me.” Wilbur replied, “speaking of which…”
“Yeah?” Quackity asked.
“I know you’re off Week 4, and now that I’ve got a big man job and all, I was wondering if you;d like to go out somewhere fancy.”
“Obviously, how fancy are we talking?”
“Fancier than the pizza place where we had our first date.” Wilbur answered.
“Like Olive Garden fancy?” Quackity asked.
“Maybe, you’ll just have to see.” Wilbur answered, going in for a kiss.
The world melted away for a moment as their lips met, and Wilbur felt as though he had all the answers in the world. He pulled Quackity into an embrace again. He rested his head on Quackity’s shoulder, and could feel Quackity pulling him closer.
As Phil left the office they seperated, but walked side by side to the dining hall to meet with the staff. It was only one week of the summer, but Wilbur was grateful for any time he would get to spend here.
The past year had been filled with challenging moments and new stressors, but it had also been the happiest of his life. With Quackity by his side, he felt like he could face any new challenge.
As he walked through the field as he had so many times before, he didn’t feel at all like a ghost. In fact, he felt so alive, and so real. He didn't have to remind himself to breathe.
Wilbur didn’t care about the future. He didn't care about the past or even where they were going. He and Quackity were walking together, and the only thing that mattered was the two of them.
And it was that moment, when Wilbur knew that he and Quackity would be together forever. He wanted to spend his life with Quackity and grow old together. But that was years in the future, and right now he only had one thing that needed to be said.
“Hey Q,” he whispered, moving closer, out of earshot of anyone who might overhear.
“Yeah?’ Quackity whispered back.
“I love you.” Wilbur said.
“I love you too.” Quackity said without hesitation.
And Wilbur knew that no matter what his future held, he wouldn;t face it alone.
So what did he have to fear?
He was safe, and he was loved.
