Chapter Text
“Stupid stupid stupid.” Brainy kept telling himself the same thing over and over again. It was a simple task. Create a device that could track the gang of alien fugitives that were using psychic waves to mask their presence and alter people’s minds. A task so easy a 2nd level intellect should be able to do it, so then why was he having so much trouble. He had adjusted the frequency to the exact ones of the alien, calibrated it so that it would only match the aliens they’re looking for and not others from there species, and fed all the information he could gather about them so that facial recognition would work. None of it was working.
The others were relying on him to do this. The fugitives were controlling people, hypnotizing them into being puppets. Being forced to commit crimes they wouldn’t normally be doing. Worst of all, they kidnapped them to use again later. There was so much pressure to catch this gang and it was all on Brainy being able to track them down. Brainy looked at his failure, all those people gone because of him.
With his hands between his face he screamed in annoyance. Luckily Nia was passing by the lab and heard the sound of her boyfriend’s screams. Nia walked cautiously to the door to the lab and saw her love in distress. It didn’t take much for her to figure out what was going on. The tracker to his side, the many papers scattered around him, and the most obvious the rare but recognizable face Nia knew Brainy made when he was confused.
Nia quickly walked towards Brainy with concern all over her face. “Brainy, what’s wrong. “ Brainy looked up at the love of his life with tears dripping down his cheek. Nia grabbed Brainy and held his head to her chest, cradling him to calm him down. “ It’s useless,” Brainy said, his sobs slowing as he matched the rhythm Nia was comforting him. “The device won’t work and there is no other way to free everyone’s minds from the aliens psychic link. It’s useless. I’m useless.”
At this Brainy started to sob again. Nia tried to talk to him more, but Brainy was so miserable Nia could tell he wasn’t listening. Brainy wasn’t used to not being able to solve problems, and with so much on the line he couldn’t allow himself to be confused. If it wasn’t for her holding him, Nia was afraid Brainy would just lose control of himself. Since she knew Brainy couldn’t listen to her verbally, she would try another approach. With Brainy still nuzzled in her chest and in her arms, she took a pencil and one of the papers on the desk and began to write.
Nia looked at her worked and smiled. Brainy had calmed down a little, enough that Nia could still speak softly to him. “Brainy,” she whispered to get his attention. Brainy looked up to see his girlfriend smiling at him. Nia then gently waved the note in front of him until he took it in his hands. With a sniffle and through tear stained eyes, Brainy read through the note that made his love smile so happily.
Brainy,
I know it’s hard not knowing, especially in the position your in. Your the smartest man I know and you are capable of anything. Always remember. You always have me and whatever the problem is we’ll solve it. Together. And together we’re more powerful then any villain that tries to stop us.
Love,
Nia
As Nia watched Brainy read she thought she noticed a small smile appear on his face. Brainy started at the note, reading it over and over, wanting to hear her words in his mind again and again. He lean into a hug. “Thank you,” was all he could say before he nuzzled back into her chest, wanting Nia to hold him. Nia happily obliged and as she comforted her boyfriend she couldn’t help but notice that Brainy had her note clutched against his chest, using it as a comfort item, to remind him he’s not alone and will always have her.
