Just A Few Screws Loose

Chapter 2: The Gaps We Fall Through

Summary:

A bit more of Izuku's first day. Again.

Notes:

Hellooo! Shorter chapter this time, again, but I hope you enjoy it!

Also, I've changed my username, so now if you need to address me specifically in a comment or something, feel free to call me aify (aye-fee) instead of Lux so you don't have to spell out the full user. No, aify is not my real name. It's just an abbreviation of my user (again I failed you = once again I have failed you).

I hope you like this chapter! Thank you for reading! :))

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Izuku’s train of thought was interrupted when Power Loader started class.

“Alright students! Kiddos! Besties! ….Do kids still call people besties anymore? Whatever, welcome to your first official day at U.A. High!!” The hero announced.

Excited murmurs flew around the classroom. They had all finally reached their goal: and this was only the beginning.

“I hope you’re all as hopeful as I am for this new school year! I can’t wait to see what you all accomplish,” The man smiled, and Izuku did too. He was going to show Power Loader just what he could do.

He turned back to Hatsume to find she had a similar grin on her face, though hers was more unhinged.

“Now for attendance…” It was a relatively small class, so he had an easy time paying attention to each student as their names were called.

“Hirota Takashi?” A tall boy with bright blue hair raised his hand.

“Takei Hikaru?” Another student, this one a girl with deep purple eyes and black hair, brought her arm up.

“Lucca Narcisa?” A girl with dark hair pulled back in a braid answered with a quiet ‘present’.

His attention was pulled away from attendance when the purple-eyed girl sitting across from him – Takei – leaned over and onto his table.

“Just so you know, the general public does not think that quirkless people eat cats. I don’t know what’s up with that girl, but she’s certainly unique,” She said.

“Oh. That’s good to know,” He replied.

“My name’s Takei Hikaru, but you probably know that since he just called my name,” She let out a small laugh, and he followed suit.

“Haha, yeah. I’m Midoriya Izuku, and the girl behind me is Hatsume Mei,” He told her. Hatsume started paying attention at the mention of her name.

“Hey, call me Mei!” She said a bit too loudly.

“What classes are you taking? Other than support, of course,” Takei questioned the both of them.

“The basics, plus quirk study and psychology,”

“And I’m taking culinary! I shall master the art of cupcake-babeis!”

They all giggled, trying not to disrupt the class too much.

Izuku raised his hand as his name was called and the two girls continued with their conversation.

----------

Takei joined Izuku and Mei for lunch when the time came. Turns out, they shared the same quirk studies class along with all the basics, so they had become close rather quickly.

They were all chatting when Kacchan finally came up to their table, eyebrow raised in a questioning glance.

“Kacchan! There you are!” He exclaimed.

“Deku, hey!” The blonde’s attention turned to the girls at the table. “Who’re…”

Izuku didn’t give him time to finish.

“Oh, these are some friends I made in the support course! This is Mei,” He pointed to the pink-haired girl, who was already bouncing up and down in her seat. “And this is Takei,” he said.

“Cool. Anyways, how’re your-” Kacchan was cut off once again, and Izuku noticed how it was annoying him. He was doing a good job of pulling himself together though.

Two others he recognized from homeroom, a tall boy named Hirota and a girl he was 90% sure was an exchange student from Italy, Narcisa, approached the table.

“Hey, mind if we have a seat?” Narcisa mumbled. She seemed pretty shy.

“Uh, sure!” He responded, hoping the others wouldn’t mind.

The girls nodded, and Kacchan didn’t say anything, which was as good of a response as he was going to give.

For the rest of lunch, he and his new friends all got to know one another. Kacchan even seemed somewhat interested. He’d be worried for his friend if he hadn’t seen him shoo away a bunch of hero course students trying to sit with him. So, he focused on the support students. They all had such interesting quirks.

Narcisa, who was in fact an exchange student, could change her body temperature. It could work either way, making her colder or hotter, but she had an easier time increasing her temperature. Takei’s quirk allowed her to hover a few inches off the ground, and Hirota could change the state of an object. He could make a liquid a solid, a gas a liquid, and even a solid a gas! They were incredible. Izuku couldn't help muttering away about all their potential, to the point where Kacchan had to elbow him in the ribs.

“Shh. Wouldn’t want a little birdie to give you away,” He whispered.

Izuku gulped. Riiiight. That tiny secret he was keeping? Very important it didn’t come out in a muttering spree.

By the time the bell rang signifying the end of lunch, all of his worries had given way to an ecstatic feeling.

----------

Katsuki tripped three times on his way to meet Izuku. They were going to walk to school together again for their second day, and if he was being honest, he was so happy his feet just couldn’t move as fast as he wanted them to.

He cursed them out not-so-silently as he met up with Deku.

“OI! YOU READY!” He called, grabbing his best friend's attention.

“Yep! I can’t wait! I mean obviously, I’m a bit nervous, with all the da-. Well, you know, but I’m sure our first day is gonna be excellent!”

Katsuki’s eyes shifted, his face taking on a sad expression. Izuku noticed immediately.

“It’s…” He cut him off.

“You forgot again. It’s our second day, Izu,” He said as gently as he could. Izuku’s face fell.

“Oh,”

The blonde smiled, ready to do anything to cheer him up. “Don’t worry, you told me everything. I’ll fill you in,” He reassured him.

Deku nodded and they started walking, recounting yesterday’s events the whole time.

He was starting to get worried about the green-haired boy. The gaps in his memory kept getting worse and worse, and eventually, Katsuki feared he’d forget everything.

Even him.

Stupid quirk. Stupid All for One.

He wished his best friend were really quirkless.

The side effects weren’t as nasty.

Notes:

I know what you're thinking... but, aify, this is supposed to be a crack fic! Right?! Yes, technically. But, although it's quite a depressing chapter, it's necessary. Next chapter crack shenanigans will resume!

As usual, let me know if I missed any spelling mistakes or necessary CW/TWs.

Notes:

I know this chapter wasn't the best humor-wise, but I promise the crack will get better as we move along. Crackier, if you will. I also know that this style of humor isn't everyone's cup of tea. It does make me laugh though, and it allows me some wiggle room when it comes to writing. This fic will also not be entirely crack. I'm not great at writing it, and at a certain point, it has to get serious.

So slight crack in general, but will still get crackier.

Thank you for giving this a chance, even if you don't like it so far!
