Chapter Text
You’d been hardly able to sit still all day. How could you? You were excited. You were finally going to be able to see your husband again after nearly a month without him.
Thomas’ mother had been wanting to introduce him to publishers in London for a while, and though he wished to be recognised for his work, he dreaded leaving you alone.
Eventually, you had convinced him to go, despite the fact that you would miss him horribly. You were proud of him, and did not want him to give up on his dreams because of you. As hard as it had been, you got through the time without him, and soon, he would be home and in your arms once more.
You’d been by the window for most of the day, a book laying open and forgotten beside you. Every time you heard a noise outside you looked, hoping to catch a glimpse of the carriage that would be delivering your beloved back to you. Then you would see nothing, and sigh in disappointment as you realised you must continue to wait.
When you turned your head again for what felt like the thousandth time, you hadn’t really been expecting anything, but there in the driveway was a carriage and you felt your heart fluttering in your chest with excitement and anticipation. You jumped up from your seat, racing out of the room and down the stairs, thankfully remembering at the last second to hold up your skirts so you wouldn’t trip.
Thomas was just stepping out of the carriage as you arrived outside, and as he looked up, your eyes met his. He grinned, and you couldn’t help yourself but close the extra distance between the two of you, enveloping him in a tight embrace.
“My love, how I have missed you,” Thomas told you with a breathless laugh. You might have been squeezing him too hard but neither of you seemed to care. You were together again, and that was all that mattered.
“I’ve missed you too, darling,” you replied, pulling back slightly so you could look at his face, feeling little tears pricking in your eyes, and seeing the same in his. You’d been waiting for this for far too long, so you leaned in to kiss him, holding his face gently between your hands.
“I love you,” Thomas whispered to you between short kisses, seemingly having so much to say but being mostly unable to keep his lips from yours for too long. “Being apart from you for so long was torture… I never wish to leave you again…”
“And I never wish to be without you, dear husband,” You rested your forehead against his, eyes closed. Thomas tried to steal another kiss, but you pulled away from him at the last moment with a cheeky grin. “Now come inside, Thomas, you must be exhausted. You should sit for a while.”
“All of my exhaustion faded away the very moment I saw your face, my angel,” Thomas mused as you led him indoors, and your cheeks grew warm at his words. Once you were inside and the doors were closed, you turned to look at him, and in an instant you were wrapped up in his arms once more. He spoke to you quietly now, though there was no one else around to hear. “I would like to apologise for leaving you alone for so long, if you would allow me to make it up to you.”
There was nothing to apologise for, but the tone in Thomas’ voice and the look in his eyes caused that flutter of excitement in your heart again. Your face burned even hotter as you grabbed his hand in yours, intertwining your fingers. “I think I would enjoy that very much.”
