Work Text:
“It’s nearly midnight, Y/N,” Alison said, looking over to Thomas, who was sitting by himself across the room. “Maybe you and Thomas could finally get a chance to, you know…”
If you had still been alive, you knew you would have been blushing furiously, and it only would have become worse when Thomas seemed to notice you looking at him, giving you one of his beautiful smiles. “Alison, I don’t even know if he wants to kiss me…”
Alison had to stifle a laugh. “Before you showed up, I could barely get him to leave me alone for five minutes, now all he talks about is you. Believe me, he wants to kiss you.”
“Just last week, I walked in on him writing a poem about your ‘soft rosy lips’,” Julian interjected, far too loudly, coming up behind you and resting his arm on your shoulder. “Bit weird, if you ask me. I don’t know why he doesn’t just–”
“Stay out of it, Julian!” you sputtered, pushing Julian’s arm off of you.
“Just trying to help.” The politician shrugged nonchalantly and walked away. Luckily, Thomas seemed so lost in his own thoughts that he hadn’t heard any of that nonsense.
“Seriously though, Y/N. Thomas looks a bit lonely over there, maybe you should go and keep him company.” Alison gave you an encouraging smile, before going to pay attention to Kitty, who had been calling after her for the past few minutes.
You supposed you should listen to Alison. She was your friend and she wanted you to be happy, she wouldn’t try and lead you astray.
As you walked across the room, you felt the butterflies in your stomach. You weren’t always this nervous around Thomas, although you had been harbouring a massive crush on him since you met, but he was your closest friend among your fellow ghosts. But ever since you decided that your New Year’s resolution would be to finally tell him how you felt about him, you’d found yourself more flustered around him than usual.
“Y/N, good evening,” Thomas said, regarding you with yet another bright smile as he politely stood from his chair when you approached. “Can you believe it, yet another year, almost at an end?”
“I can’t believe that this time last year, I was celebrating with my family and friends,” you replied with a sigh. You tried your best not to think about what you’d lost when you died, but sometimes it could be difficult.
“Oh, my dear,” Thomas said sympathetically, placing a gentle hand on your arm. Your heart would have skipped a beat had you been alive. “I know it is not easy, but please know that we all appreciate your presence here. You have been a very welcome addition to our lives – or rather, deaths.”
“You’re sweet, Thomas.” You smiled, tucking a stray strand of hair behind your ear. He always seemed to know how to make you feel better. “Thank you.”
“You are very welcome.”
Thomas smiled back softly. How could it be that you’d fallen so madly in love with him when you’d only known him for a little under a year? Before you could think too much about it, you heard the others begin counting down the seconds until the clock chimed midnight. You turned your head to look at them, all excited and crowded around each other.
“5!”
This was your chance. It was now or never. You looked back at Thomas, staring into his soft brown eyes. Anxious, you fidgeted with the fabric of your dress.
“4!”
Thomas stared back at you, You were both unsure of what to do, what the other wanted. Should you take this chance? Alison seemed to think you should, she was your friend, and she wouldn’t steer you wrong, right?
“3!”
You stepped closer to Thomas, so close that you were nearly touching. Thomas didn’t make any moves to step away, that was a good sign, and you could see the fondness in his eyes.
“2!”
You weren’t sure which one of you started leaning in first, but it didn’t really matter. Your eyes fluttered closed.
“1!”
All of a sudden, Thomas’ hands were gently holding your face and your lips were finally, finally touching his. You wrapped your arms around his torso, pulling him as close to you as possible.
“Happy New Year!”
You didn’t know how long it had been once you and Thomas finally pulled away from each other. You simply smiled, wider than you probably ever had, unable to look away from Thomas’ face. The utter joy you felt was mirrored in Thomas’ own expression, as he softly caressed your cheek.
“What did I tell you?” Alison asked, a little smugly, as she walked past you and out of the room.
