Chapter Text
Jonah woke up, slumped over against the back of the passenger seat. He sat up immediately feeling how sore his back felt from being compacted like that for what was most likely hours. He groaned, stretching and rubbing his eyes. The blonde in the front seat was still asleep, great. Now Jonah had to sit here bored since he woke himself up already. Jonah looked out the window at the pitch black environment around him.
His thoughts turned against him as he stared outside. He imagined an alternate standing right in his view, blending in with the shadows as it approached to kill him and Adam- well, maybe not Adam. He seemed to get away from alternate encounters unharmed every time. Jonah moved himself to the car floor to get the windows out of his view, feeling paranoid out of his mind. He covered his eyes, blocking the tears from falling. He could feel his thoughts spiral out of control, thinking that he was going to be killed by an alternate or that Adam would turn on him. His mind focused less on those for once but it led to the thought of Adam not getting lucky this time.
For a reason not even Jonah knew, this made him more upset than the thought of his own death. He knew Adam would be upset if he died, but Adam would know how to get over his death. Mourning always comes second to him.
Jonah knew he was nothing without Adam. He wouldn’t have a job, a best friend, or any of his current life without Adam. If Adam died… He wouldn’t be able to get over it. It would lead to his own demise sooner or later. He would probably be kicked from the BPS if Adam was gone, too. He wasn’t too close with Sarah. She would probably think he was dead weight to the group, even if it would just be him and her left. Quiet sobs left his throat as he tucked his head into his knees, his grip on his own arms tightening to the point it was leaving crescent shaped marks in his skin. His ears were ringing, his head pounding and making it hard to think straight. He fought for his breath, the oxygen refusing to go into his lungs. His stomach churned, he forced his throat to hold back anything attempting to come up resulting in an even more difficult time breathing.
Jonah was lost in the hopeless and terrifying thoughts, not even noticing the boy in the driver seat stirring in his sleep. Adam blinked open his eyes, hearing his friends sobbing but not registering what the sound was. He shot up from his seat when he realized what the sound had been. He called Jonah's name quietly to try and get his attention. Jonah hadn’t heard him until the fourth time, Adam's voice shook, trying to remain calm for the sake of the boy in the back seat.
Jonah’s attention was directed at Adam now, he raised his head and tried to force his tears to stop, wiping his eyes. He didn’t want Adam to know about his breakdown. God, now Adam was going to hate him-
Jonah’s thoughts were cut off once again by Adam climbing into the backseat sitting opposite from Jonah on the floor.
“You okay?” Adam questioned. He already knew the answer, but he wanted to help Jonah calm down, even if he had no idea how to handle a situation like this. Jonah shook his head no, feeling embarrassed about being seen crying by the blond. He couldn’t bear to look at his friend's face. He expected Adam to be embarrassed for him, or maybe disgusted at the fact he couldn’t even keep his own mind in check.
“You wanna talk about it?” The question came out as a soft whisper. He had never seen Jonah like this in all the years the two had been friends. Jonah shook his head again, instead moving towards Adam. Adam lowered his legs and let Jonah move on top of him, the silver haired boy laying his head against his chest. Adam wrapped his arms around Jonah's body rubbing small circles on his back, soothing the boy below him the best he could.
Jonah melted into Adam. The physical affection wasn’t a common thing for either of the boys. The tears began falling again, this time though, for another reason. Adam continued comforting his friend who sobbed against his hoodie. The two stayed like that for a while.
Eventually Jonah’s sobbing died down and was replaced with light snoring. Adam smiled down at the sleeping boy, enjoying the moment. They hadn’t had a truly calm moment in so long and it made him glad that they could still have things like this. His eyelids felt heavy and Adam allowed them to shut, leaving the two asleep in the back of their car.
