Chapter Text
Upon arriving at the small house, Luka rolled their shoulders as she adjusted the bags hanging off of her arms. She rang the doorbell, waiting in the cold as the door remained closed against the harsh winds. It wasn’t long before she had to re-ring the doorbell, the door finally opening to reveal a pretty woman (Luka couldn’t help but blush slightly at her- she was practically their type..) who smiled brightly at Luka. “You must be the babysitter! Come on in, I’ll fill you in on everything.”
Almost as if entranced, Luka stepped inside and shuddered at the sudden warmth of the home. Looking around, they noticed just how many framed photos were on the wall… and how every single one of them contained the pretty woman and her kid. It was heartwarming just how much she seemed to love her son, yet Luka couldn’t help but feel slightly jealous- Shaking off the thought, she followed the woman to the table and sat across from her, noticing different lists had already been filled out and placed. The woman, Lila (took a second but they remembered), pushed them towards Luka before beginning to explain, lightly smiling at their confused look. “My son can be a bit of a handful- trust me, but he’s a sweet boy. He really enjoys Halloween- or ‘spooky month’ as he calls it, so I hope that’s alright… oh! I’ll be leaving early tomorrow morning, so just make sure to keep track of this list. My son likes being called Skid- it’s his favorite nickname…” as Lila continued, Luka had to keep herself from zoning out. The fact that one kid had so many lists made them nervous. Why the hell would one kid have so many lists?! They picked up one of the papers and looked over it. It was labeled “sensory list”:
- No rough fabrics (he says it makes his skin itch).
- No eggs.
- Peel and cut apples or else he won’t eat them.
- Gloves stay on!
It was a short list… but it definitely reminded Luka of their own mental one… Personally, they found gloves too irritating- especially the way they could feel it between their fingers. They shuddered at the thought before turning back to Lila, who seemed to be finishing up her ramblings about how to care for her son. Luka smiled a little and nodded. “Don’t worry, Miss Lila. I’m sure this week will be super fun for the both of us.” She gave a smile to them, standing and leading them to the guest room. It was mostly empty, with only a few paintings filled with photos of flowers and the town. The pair said goodnight to each other before the door was closed behind Lila. Luka sat on the bed, leaning back to feel the warmth of the bed underneath her. She smiled and closed her eyes, a sense of excitement washing over her. Maybe this was the real turn-around of their life. The last few doubts in her mind vanished as she fell asleep…
Luka stirred, feeling a sudden weight on the bed next to her. She groaned, reaching up to rub the sleep out of her eyes. Staring down, Luka finally noticed what was causing the extra weight. A young boy in a skeleton costume. He was sitting on their lap. He had a bright smile and large eyes as she sat up to look at him. For a few moments, the room was filled with silence before the boy spoke up, his voice filling the room.
“Hi! I am skid! Are you the babysitter my mom told me about?” Luka didn’t know whether to scream or to hit the kid- but eventually, they settled on neither. “Uh- yeah- Hi… kid. I’m.. uh.. Luka..” She shook her head and sighed. “Why are you sitting on top of me..? It’s.. like… 7 am or something…” The boy (skid?? What kind of name even was that…) only laughed and stood up, holding his hand out to her. “Because! I wanna go get candy can, but my mom said I can’t go without you!” Luka groaned and nodded, gently ushering him off the bed as she stood, stretching. After adjusting her clothes and putting a choker on, she headed out and towards the kitchen. Glancing again at the list posted on the fridge. It was far too early to think properly- but late enough that she had an idea of what they could eat.
Taking out a few jars and slices of bread, She easily slapped together some food for the kid and herself to eat, sitting down on the couch as Skid turned on the TV. The first channel to appear was a horror marathon channel, and based on his excitement, Luka guessed this is what he watched almost every day. They weren’t the biggest fan of horror but could appreciate it for its artistic value. Props and effects entranced her as she was glued to the screen. The kid seemed to be in a similar state, cheering when the killer caught up to the final girl. It honestly should’ve scared her, but she was too tired to care. Besides, kids are weird anyways. They sat there, finishing their sandwich before turning to the kid. He had mentioned a ‘candy can’, but weren’t those only given out on Halloween? There’s no way she’d be able to convince the candy people to give her a can since her social skills were practically zero.
She leaned back against the couch, glancing down at the kid before sighing. This was gonna be a long week.
