Chapter 3: Just Meant To Be (II)

Summary:

It’s been almost a week since Class 1-A’s monthly Karaoke Night where Hitoshi asked Izuku out on a date. He’s working peacefully in his office until his newest issue pops up in the form of his ex. Izuku has to deal with Shouto and his own insecurities ahead of his very first date with Hitoshi. But he’ll get there… He’s not missing this.

Chapter Text

When Izuku opens the door, his breath leaves him at the sight of Hitoshi. He’s wearing a green beanie over his hair, dark gray, ripped jeans, and a simple hero Deku sweatshirt.

“You look-” starts Izuku a bit breathless as his eyes wander up to meet Hitoshi’s own wide eyes.

“Stunning, Izu, you look stunning.” says Hitoshi as he takes over, eyes lifting to meet Izuku’s, soft smile curving his lips.

“So do you, Toshi, I- I love the sweatshirt.” replies Izuku as he tries to calm himself down, heart racing at the sight of Hitoshi in his merch, smiling soft and sweet.

“I’m glad you do, Eri got it for me last week. I’m surprised, happily surprised, to see you in the bunny sweatshirt and tights. You ready to swing?” asks Hitoshi as he holds up the capture weapon in his hand, eyes bright with happiness.

“Can we really swing there from here?” asks Izuku even as he rocks excitedly back and forth from his tiptoes to his heel.

“If we take the way I typically go when I bring food here for squad night, absolutely. Let’s get to your roof and get going!” replies Hitoshi as he reaches his free hand out, smile going soft when Izuku intertwines their fingers together, holding his hand firmly as he steps into the hall.

Luckily for them, they only have to go up three more floors to be let out onto the roof of the apartment building.

“Alright, you’re going to have to hold on tight, Izu.” says Hitoshi as he pulls them to the ledge, latching his capture weapon on the tall streetlamp behind the building.

Izuku wraps his arms around Hitoshi’s neck, sad to have to let go of his hand, but he knows how he has to do this. Hitoshi lifts him, and Izuku activates float as he wraps his legs around Hitoshi’s waist. Now, this isn’t typically how Hitoshi swings civilians to safe locations, but Izuku learned the hard way that he had to hide his face in Hitoshi’s neck as they swung or he’d get sick. As Izuku tucks his face in Hitoshi’s neck, he realizes Hitoshi smells faintly of the cedarwood scented cologne he’d bought him for Christmas. He melts at the fact that Hitoshi is actually wearing it, lightly squeezing himself around Hitoshi a little tighter.

“Here we go, bunny.” says Hitoshi before they’re off, swinging from street lamps to building balconies, down the road and around two corners.

When they touch down, Hitoshi softly says, “Deactivate float.”

And Izuku does, pulling his face out of Hitoshi’s neck to see that they’re on top of the diner, the big sign right behind Hitoshi.

“We’re eating on top of the diner?” asks Izuku as he leans back slightly to meet Hitoshi’s eyes, fingers laced behind Hitoshi’s neck.

“Yep, bunny. Our setup is behind you actually.” replies Hitoshi amusedly as he nods at something over Izuku’s shoulder, soft and thoughtful. “But you gotta get down so you can turn and see it.”

“Oh, right…” chuckles Izuku nervously as he unwraps his legs, sliding down as his hands move to lay flat on Hitoshi’s shoulders.

“Now, close your eyes and don’t open ‘em til I tell you too, okay?” says Hitoshi softly, encouragingly as he grins, his own nerves shining through as Izuku shuts his eyes firmly.

Hitoshi twists them around slowly, hand on Izuku’s waist, guiding, then he brings Izuku’s hands down to his sides, ducks around to stand behind Izuku, and whispers, “Open your eyes, bunny.”

Izuku’s eyes flutter open and his vision has never blurred so quickly. There are hanging lights strung through a crate tower as the background, a simple purple and green blanket is sprawled on the ground, and on two plates that are set out with cutlery on either side of them, is Katsudon.

“You did all this for our first date?” asks Izuku breathlessly as he turns to look at Hitoshi, wiping the tears from his cheeks.

“Yeah, I had some help from Blasty and Eiji, and Momo, but yeah. I figured a picnic date before a drive-in movie would be good. The car’s parked down there behind the diner, and Dad offered to clean this up since he’s patrolling for me tonight.” replies Hitoshi sheepishly as he explains his plans, giving props where it’s due, rubbing his neck with a hand.

“This is beyond the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. Thank you, Toshi, it’s beautiful.” says Izuku as he wraps his arms around Hitoshi’s neck, hugging him tightly before pulling back slowly.

“I’m glad, bunny. You deserved it, so I did my best to provide it. Come on, the food should be cool enough to eat.” replies Hitoshi as his eyes lock on Izuku’s, a tension starting to build before he breaks it, nodding towards the set-up.

Izuku’s cheeks heat up, a little embarrassed, a little rejected, and he clears his throat, putting space between them as he says, “I appreciate it.”

“Hey, hold on ‘Zu… what’s wrong?” asks Hitoshi lightly as he softly touches Izuku’s shoulder.

“Nothing, Toshi, promise!” replies Izuku quickly, smiling at him reassuringly.

“Hey, bunny, I wanna clear this up. I don’t want to assume anything, but I really hope you know how badly I want to kiss you. I just swore to myself that I wouldn’t push.” explains Hitoshi as he walks around Izuku, voice soft as he steps onto the picnic blanket.

“Y-you… r-really?” asks Izuku softly, stuttering in his surprise.

“For a really long time, Izu. But I don’t want to push, so why don’t we work through our dinner?” replies Hitoshi as he settles down on the blanket next to a plate, patting the other space invitingly as he meets Izuku’s gaze.

“Well, just so you know, kitten, it wouldn’t be pushing.” says Izuku as he settles himself into the spot Hitoshi gestured towards, winking at Hitoshi cheekily before picking up his plate. “I know we’re on a tight schedule, so let’s enjoy this lovely dinner. This was such a thoughtful idea, Toshi, truly brilliant.”

“You are trouble.” mutters Hitoshi as he picks up his plate of food.

“I am still the number one problem child, kitten, you knew what you were signing up for.” replies Izuku with a teasing tone, soft giggles escaping him.

“That I did, bunny, and I wouldn’t change a thing.” says Hitoshi fondly after a bite of food.

They sit there eating and talking about anything and everything. Hitoshi tells Izuku about the student that had him feeling all soft, and Izuku tells Hitoshi about Eijirou and Katsuki teasing him at the office.

“They weren’t wrong… But you just needed to be comfortable, no matter what you chose to wear.” says Hitoshi as he lightly pokes Izuku in his thigh, their plates stacked in front of their singular mason jar candle.

“You really think so? Honestly, you know I’m comfortable in everything. I just chose the fleece tights because I didn’t want to get too cold.” replies Izuku with a soft chuckle, poking Hitoshi in retaliation.

“Oh, absolutely. And I packed blankets just in case you got cold. Are you ready to go?” asks Hitoshi as his phone starts ringing in his jean pocket.

When he pulls it out, Izuku sees it’s an alarm telling him to hurry to catch the Silver Age movie. Something makes him gooey, so as Hitoshi shuts the alarm off, Izuku leans over to brush a soft kiss against Hitoshi’s cheek. As he pulls back, Hitoshi turns to him with wide eyes as his cheek reddens.

“You’re so sweet and thoughtful, Toshi, thank you.” says Izuku softly, feeling seen in a way he’s never felt before.

“I- You’re welcome… But it’s just effort… I want you to enjoy spending this time with me.” says Hitoshi quietly, his nerves showing as he averts his eyes.

“It’s the best first date I’ve been on, Toshi, and it’s not even over yet.” replies Izuku as he lightly pokes Hitoshi’s red cheek, voice soft and warm.

“You’re very right, it’s not over yet. Are you ready to go watch the Silver Age All Might movie?” asks Hitoshi as he stands, holding both hands out for Izuku to take.

“Absolutely!” exclaims Izuku excitedly as he takes Hitoshi’s hands and is pulled up, chuckling lightly as Hitoshi picks up the mason jar to blow out the candle. “Let’s go!”

“Let’s go.” says Hitoshi, chuckling as they move to the edge of the roof behind the crate light tower.

Hitoshi swings down as Izuku uses blackwhip to swing himself down, a mini race that Izuku wins by a millisecond. They climb into Hitoshi’s Chevy Impala, and Izuku takes note of the blankets neatly folded on the middle seat between them.

Their drive is fairly short, driving to a lot two blocks away from the diner. Hitoshi finds a reserved spot near the back, and he backs in so they can see the large projected movie.

“I’m gonna go grab twizzlers, dr. pepper, water, and some popcorn. Do I need to grab anything else?” asks Hitoshi as he twists the knob for his radio to 97.2 and fixes the volume so the movie’s sound comes through his car after he bluetooths it.

“Nope, that all sounds like a perfect snack catch. Do you want me to come help carry? I brought my mask.” offers Izuku softly as the opening for Silver Age begins to play.

“Nah, I got it. I’ll be right back.” replies Hitoshi softly as he opens the door and slips out of the car.

Izuku pulls one of the blankets out of its fold, slipping his shoes off as he curls up in the seat, thankfully not waiting more than ten minutes for Hitoshi to pop the door open.

“Alright, here is the popcorn and your water.” says Hitoshi quietly as he hands them to Izuku before climbing in with his own bottle and the twizzlers. “I got a medium popcorn because I’m not particularly wanting it right now, but I might later. And they were out of buckets and large bags.”

“No big deal. I’m not really hungry yet, so we can leave the popcorn between us for now.” suggests Izuku even as he fights off a pout at his own suggestion.

“If you set it on the dash, we could sit together instead.” offers Hitoshi as he clicks on one of his lights above the radio, eyes alight with mirth as he grins.

“I like that plan better.” says Izuku happily as Hitoshi takes the popcorn and sets it on the dash in front of him. “You want to just share this blanket? It’s huge.”

“Absolutely, plop yourself in the middle and share. Get comfortable, bunny.” replies Hitoshi as he tosses the extra blanket to the backseat, turning the light off after Izuku scoots into the middle, laying part of the blanket over Hitoshi’s lap.

Izuku melts into Hitoshi’s side, but he doesn’t do more than let his arm press into Hitoshi’s. He’s muttering little tidbits two minutes later, and Hitoshi hums, asking a question every few sentences. They’re a good half hour into the movie when Hitoshi adjusts his arm to lay across the seat, and Izuku seamlessly tucks himself into Hitoshi’s side, leaning his head into the crook of Hitoshi’s shoulder and neck as he boldly reaches a hand back for Hitoshi’s arm to wrap around him. Izuku plays with Hitoshi’s fingers, sprawled sideways, back against Hitoshi’s chest, enjoying the movie as he goes quiet.

“You don’t have more facts for me, bunny?” asks Hitoshi softly after a few minutes, curious and worried.

Izuku twists his head to look at Hitoshi and says, “I mean, I always do, but I’m enjoying this a lot.”

“Okay, you don’t have to say any more facts. I was just curious and a bit worried, but I do want you to know, I was enjoying them a lot. I always do.” says Hitoshi softly as his purple eyes lock on green, fondness for Izuku dripping off his tongue sweetly.

Izuku adjusts himself so he’s facing Hitoshi, bringing his arm around so he can keep playing with his fingers, looks him in the eyes nervously, and asks, “I really wasn’t bothering you?”

“Of course not, Izu, never. I love your mumbles, your infinite facts, I enjoy it all greatly. Makes movie night a lot of fun, plus I love when you can save ‘em for after because you make things connect so much easier. It makes movie night ten times more fun for me.” replies Hitoshi genuinely as he explains himself, reassuring and open.

“I- th-thanks, Toshi, I- Thank you.” stutters Izuku as he looks down at the hand he’s holding in both of his own, shy but happy.

“Izu,” whispers Hitoshi quietly before he crooks a finger, from his free hand, under Izuku’s chin to bring those green eyes up to meet his own. “I’m always honest, sometimes to a fault, so hear me when I say, we all enjoy your mumbles. The ones who truly care for you to enjoy your rambling tangents. It’s your passion, and we love to see it.”

Izuku is stuck, eyes looking deep into purple, and he’s teary-eyed as Hitoshi speaks to him. They jump out of their skin a moment later as the end credits to the movie plays, their moment shattering.

“You have an early day, right?” asks Hitoshi on a lighter note as cars start leaving.

“Yeah, it’s paperwork day. Me and Kacchan will be in the meeting room handling Agency paperwork and reviewing things. We’re usually there until late night patrols start.” replies Izuku with a soft groan, silently wishing for their moment back.

“Let’s get you home then, bunny. You need to get some sleep before you spend all day bored out of your mind because of stuff you enjoy in bits at a time.” says Hitoshi as he shifts gears to pull them out of their spot.

“Alright, but do I get a goodnight kiss?” asks Izuku shyly, settling in the passenger seat and staring at his hands.

“If you want one, I’ll be all too happy to oblige to your request, bunny.” replies Hitoshi as he reaches his hand over to lightly hold Izuku’s.

“I definitely do, kitten.” says Izuku as he gives Hitoshi’s hand a light squeeze before interlacing their fingers together.

“When we get to your apartment, you can have a kiss, bunny. I’m all too happy to provide.” says Hitoshi as they get on the road, giving his hand a soft squeeze as he quirks a soft smile at Izuku before he focuses on the road.

Izuku takes the time to ramble off some movie facts as they drive, and Hitoshi manages to finish some of them thanks to his own research that he’d done. Every time he did, Izuku would squeal and expand, his excitement squeezing Hitoshi’s hand at different intervals until they stop in front of Izuku’s apartment building. Hitoshi switches the car into park, and turns to find Izuku much closer than he realized, green eyes darting down to the lips he’s wetting with a swipe of his tongue.

“You think I could cash in on my kiss, Toshi?” asks Izuku in a whisper as his eyes dart up to meet Hitoshi’s, want and hope swirling through emerald orbs.

Hitoshi simply brings his free hand up to cup Izuku’s cheek before leaning in slowly, giving him a simple peck first. He pulls back to find Izuku’s eyes fluttering open, and he can’t help himself. He leans in again as Izuku’s free hand fists in his sweatshirt, lightly tugging him closer as their lips slot together, soft and sweet.

Addictive.

Izuku pulls back first this time, eyes closed as he savours the taste of Hitoshi. When he finally opens his eyes, he sees Hitoshi looking at him like he’s the most important person in the world, and Izuku has never felt so special.

“Good… because you are to me.” whispers Hitoshi genuinely as his thumb brushes across Izuku’s cheek gingerly. “I don’t want this to end, bunny, but Katsuki is standing at your building’s door… And he’s flashed a light twice already.”

Izuku groans, letting his head fall forward to rest on Hitoshi’s shoulder a moment before he moves to confirm Katsuki’s position, getting a light flashed in his eyes for his trouble.

“I’d better go before he comes and drags me out of the car by my hood. Thank you for tonight, Hitoshi. I can’t wait for date number two, and let me know when you get home.” says Izuku with a slight pout as he looks at Hitoshi before his lips curve into a soft smile and he leans forward to press three soft, short kisses to Hitoshi’s lips.

“See you very soon, bunny.” replies Hitoshi as Izuku climbs out of the car, waving before the door shuts.

Izuku jogs up to the door where Katsuki is waiting impatiently, his foot tapping harshly against the concrete platform. They step inside, Katsuki huffing as Izuku nudges him in, and Izuku is already missing Hitoshi as he watches him drive away.

“Kacchan, tonight was a dream.” says Izuku wistfully as he turns to look at his best friend.

“Get your ass to the apartment. Eiji is waiting, we want to know everything.” replies Katsuki happily as he drags Izuku over to the elevators.

Izuku spends the next hour gushing about the date, cheeks flushing when Hitoshi messages him that he’s home and wishes him sweet dreams.
