Chapter Text
Warnings: mostly glossed over character death (of a villainous character, mentioned assumed character death, brief part about being trapped in the coffin,
They don’t find Daisy alive, but they don’t find a body either. Jon choses to take this as good news but it's hard to ignore the fact that she's probably dead.
Jon figures him and Tim should talk.
It goes about as well as one could expect it to go. Jon knows full well that Tim is never going to forgive him for all the stalking (in hindsight maybe it was a little extreme but in his defence it seemed like the most rational thing to do at the time) but he apologises anyway.
Tim doesn’t forgive him but they do agree to be cordial to each other.
Like he said he would, Gerry leaves.
He doesn’t give Jon a way to contact him but he does dump a notebook full of notes on the entities on Jon’s desk before he leaves. Jon doesn’t plan to try and track him down either. He figures that Gerry has more than earned a peaceful retirement.
Jon watches him walk away from the institute without looking back.
Elias gets arrested.
It was pretty satisfying to watch and Elias getting convicted of Leiter’s murder means that Jon is officially off the hook.
The downside to this is that it turns out Elias has organized his own replacement, some guy called Peter Lukas. They all agree that they are not going to make whatever nefarious plans he has as hard as possible.
Daisy is trapped. The earth pushing down on her, the pressure unending and relentless. She cannot escape and she cannot die, trapped forever in this hellish limbo.
This was not the plan.
If Elias had had his way, Jon would have died in the unknowing, completing his transformation into an avatar and generally making his job so much easier. Unfortunately that is not what happened and now he has to come up with an entirely new plan to get Jon killed.
Sigh. Prison is going to make that so much harder too.
Jon stands in the breakroom, staring at the selection of teas and attempting to figure out which one is Martin’s favourite.
After finding Martin crying in his office after whatever Elias did to him, Jon figured that the best course of action would be to make him some tea. He doubts that anything he could say would help and tea was both something Martin likes and something that people often make for people who are upset so that's what he's doing. Unfortunately Martin is the one who usually makes tea for everyone else and Jon has no idea which kind he likes or how he takes his tea at all.
He considers going back and asking but that would just be embarrassing.
So he guesses. It's the thought that counts right?
The good news is that Martin seems to at least appreciate that Jon tried. The bad news is that Martin does tell him to leave the tea making to him in the future.
But still, it's the thought that counts.
Melanie may not be able to take out her rage on Elias personally but she can and will, break into his office with a baseball bat and destroy all his stuff.
It's not quite the same as actually killing the asshole would be, especially since it won’t free her from this stupid job that she can’t quit but it is really cathartic.
She is surprised that no one else has come to check on the noise because no matter how soundproof the walls are, she is pretty sure that they should at least be able to hear her repeatedly slamming a baseball bat into the wood of Elias's desk. She takes this complete lack of reaction as a sign to continue.
While she is doing that, Tim walks past Elias’s office. He doesn’t say anything but he does give her a thumbs up through the glass.
Peter appoints Martin as his assistant.
This alone is enough to cause worry but when he starts giving Martin longer and longer hours and preventing him from heading into the main part of the office this worry gets endlessly worse.
So they come up with a solution.
Everyone goes out of their way to annoy Peter as much as possible, refusing to leave Martin and generally making themselves as big of a menace as possible.
Tim turns out to be very very good at this, which Jon is not at all surprised by. Social, loud and full of spite are generally helpful traits to have while menacing your boss who also happens to be an avatar of the Lonely.
The Flesh attacks the institute.
Why Jon doesn’t know but they do and Jon is very worried about their chances. They barely made it through the worm attack after all and it's not like the Flesh has such an easily defeatable weakness like the Corruption.
Currently is going about as well as he expected, as they slowly get pushed further and further back into the institute, forced to retreat rather than fight jared, whose both much stronger then any of them, and stronger than any human should be.
That's until the Doctor has an idea.
“The tunnels!” he yells.
“What?” Meleanie yells back, over the sound of Jared tearing Jon's office door down. “if we go down there we're just as trapped as we are up here!”
“Not necessarily” Jon realised something. “The worms got in through the tunnels”
“So there's a way in from the outside,” Tim adds.
“I was not aware of that” the Doctor says, ignoring the worm thing “but I can use the sonic to bring down the tunnels on his if we can get him down there”
“Is there anything that thing can’t do?” Tim asks, sarcastically.
“Wood”
Jared’s fist, broke through the door.
“Move” Basira somehow managed to still sound calm “now”
They head down into the tunnels, which are just as gross as last time Jon was down here. Jared follows them though so at least they have a chance now.
Martin isn’t with them. He's with Peter Lukas and for the first time Jon is glad of that.
They do find the exit to the tunnels eventually and the Doctor points to the Sonic as the ceiling of the tunnels. Jared doesn’t stop, assuming that they must have reached a dead end.
“Sorry about this” the Doctor says.
John hadn’t been expecting it to work but it does. As the Doctor aims the sonic at the roof of the tunnel, the stone above groans and crumbles, collapsing downward on Jared and trapping him under layers of stone.
They all make it out of the tunnels okay.
That went a lot better than the worm attacks.
The Doctor leaves.
This was going to happen. Jon got the feeling that the Timelord was not use to staying in one place for very long. He does, however, give Jon something before he leaves. His phone number, before doing something to Jon’s phone that would “allow him to contact him no matter where he is in time and space”.
Given the way Jon’s life has been going, that's help he's probably going to need.
Jon returns to trying to sort out the ridiculous mess that Gertrude left the archives in.
Turns out she wasn’t even keeping everything on the shelves because he finds two boxes of states shoved under a set of shelves, half crushed. He sets aside the first for later (it's labelled ‘winchesters’ which is not a name he recognizes) and focuses on the second. Its label reads ‘the doctor’.
Looks like the archives has gotten statements about him after all.
(Meanwhile, unbeknownst to our team, the web is metaphorically hitting its head against a wall as its plan unravels completely. It had not been expecting the Doctor)
(people rarely are)
