Chapter 3: Pray to God
Nina didn’t think that Ed expected to get jumped. Nina didn’t think that anyone expected to get jumped.
Yet here they were. Al pulled them back as soon as the man with the glasses appeared.
Nina still followed closely, ever loyal to her brothers.
Al had called the first warning, “stay back!” He had already lost parts of his armor suit.
“Al, take Nina and get out of here.” Ed’s voice was strangely steady for someone on Death’s Door. A second warning.
Nina didn't listen to his call. They didn't listen to Al’s cry to stop. They didn't listen to either warning, instead running up to Ed to defend him from the strange man with sunglasses.
They stood as a physical barrier between the man and their older brother.
Fear seemed to flash before Ed’s eyes.
“I’ll give you a moment to pray to God.” The words didn't seem to resonate with Nina as they were pushed to the side.
“Unfortunately, I don't have a god to pray to.” The next few moments seemed to slow to a painful pace. “Promise you’ll leave them alive?”
“You have my word.”
Just then, the shot rang out and Nina rushed back to their side.
“That won’t be necessary,” a man with dark hair and a military uniform called out. There were others in uniform too. Were they going to help Nina and their brothers?
Nina didn’t pay much attention to what happened next, instead staying curled up at Ed’s side.
At some point, a lady in uniform directed the two of them to Al’s side. Al had already been patched up with the holes being covered by a tarp of some kind.
Al was telling off the both of them, mainly for putting themselves in danger. Ed’s eyes were watering, Nina’s were too. Al’s voice sounded teary.
As Nina layed there, sprawled across the both of them, they couldn’t help but feel calm.
