Chapter Text

Kiss of the Werewolf

Sheriff Galpin nods at the nurse coming out of the hospital room he has been looking for, he pushes the door open and walks in. Sitting up in the bed is Wednesday Addams looking miserable in a white hospital gown, her left arm in a cast. Next to her is Enid Sinclair who looks at him with a surprised expression on her face. Galpin wonders what he has interrupted.

“Afternoon Addams, Miss Sinclair, how are you today?” He tries to be pleasant despite the scowl he is getting from Wednesday.

“Apart from being trapped in this appalling institution with the idiotic staff, everything is fine.” Enid nudges her shoulder. “I hope to escape from their clutches later today.”

“She’s feeling better Sheriff, now that she has had proper medical treatment. Her ribs and other injuries are healing and will heal quicker if she does not strain herself.” Enid says brightly.

Galpin turns to her “And you, how are you feeling, have those burns been looked at?”

Enid lifts her arms and pushes her sleeves back to show her forearms, he can see the faint marks on them. “They don’t hurt as much today, I have been discharged with a course of treatment, I can go home at any time, but I’m staying for a bit to keep Wednesday company.”

Galpin looks around the small brightly lit room. “Who sent the flowers?” He glances at the huge multicolored bouquet sitting under the window.

“The big bouquet is from Wednesday’s parents, they are in Europe now, the smaller one is from Yoko and Divina and the single black rose is from me. I’m keeping them over there as Wednesday is allergic to color.” Enid says proudly.

“Lovely, they sent me Ltlconf and Ltlconf a firm of lawyers. I think I escaped without having to arrest myself.” He grumbles.

“I must interrupt this love in, but why are you here sheriff? You don’t normally make house calls.” Wednesday snaps.

“Well, I just wanted to check that you were OK and to give you an update on the situation.”

Wednesday raises an eyebrow. “I assume by that, that you do not have good news.”

“Well, you were not looking too good when they carted you away in the ambulance. Anyway, I also wanted to know how you really knew where to find the vampire?” Galpin continues trying not to respond to her jibe.

Wednesday huffs as she tries to get comfortable. “Bad news it is. Anyway, Haversham was very keen to talk when we found him pinned to the floor. He was very forthcoming.” Then she adds innocently, “Did he not tell you anything?”

Galpin scowls. “No, he clammed up and asked for a lawyer, then he denied everything.” Enid snickers behind her hand at his discomfort.

He shows Wednesday a photograph of the vampire. It appears to have been taken on the streets of Jericho opposite the Weathervane. “Is this him? The vampire?” He asks her, dropping the photograph onto her blankets.

Wednesday picks up the photograph and studies the face. “Yes, it is, how did you get this image?”

“It was a gift.” He says without elaborating.

She looks at him quizzically and hands the photograph to Enid.

Galpin takes a tight grip on his hat.

“Here it comes, the bad news” Wednesday says to Enid, before Galpin can speak. “I had a visit from someone so high up in law enforcement it would make you dizzy. They have the technology to take these images and must have planted cameras around town. The cameras I have just show him as a blur.”

“Yes, that’s him.” Enid says handing the image back to Wednesday.

“Apparently the official line is that these vampire attacks never happened and officially there is no such thing as a vampire. I am to close my investigation and hand over all the evidence that I have collected.”

Wednesday snaps angrily. “But What about Zachary, Carrie, and Chris. They were killed, how is that being explained away? What have their parents been told?”

He holds up his hands. “There is an official story, I don’t say I agree with it. Everyone has been told that they were trapped in a house fire while on a school trip with Mr. Haversham and the Jones boy. I have been told not to contradict it or discuss it in public. I expect their parents have been told the same thing. Did they say the same thing to you?”

Enid nods, “They did to me, Wednesday was out cold when they visited me. They said that they would come back, did they?” She nudges Wednesday with her shoulder.

“Yes, I had to endure their inane whittering I don’t know what they hope to achieve by all of this subterfuge?”

The sheriff laughs “Welcome to the world of big government, Addams. I think they want to pretend you and the other outcasts don’t exist. Sorry.”

Wednesday is not amused and folds her arms carefully because of the cast. “More likely they want to slap us down if we step out of line. You mentioned a house fire?”

Galpin shrugs. “Yes, the house where you found the vampire was burnt down this morning. There is nothing left of it except some burned timbers.”

“And what of the vampire’s paintings and furniture. I didn’t get a chance to explore the whole house. Those items would have been able to tell us a great deal about him and his past.”

Galpin sighs “A large truck was seen departing before the fire, so I guess our government friends have taken everything.”

Wednesday refolds her arms. “So that’s it, the last few days never happened. That is not satisfactory, brushing it under the carpet won’t stop it happening again.”

Galpin shrugs his shoulders. “I know but I am only a small-town sheriff who am I to argue.”

Wednesday frowns in disbelief. “How did Alberts take it?”

“He is delighted as he is now not to blame for anything. All his problems have gone away, and the school is safe. He is as happy as Larry. I expect he’ll want to talk to you to tell you how happy he is.”

Wednesday scoffs. “Well, I shall have to talk to the principal and burst his balloon.”

“So, you don’t want us to make a statement?” Enid asks.

“No, since the investigation didn’t happen and there were no vampire attacks there is no need for a statement from either of you.”

He grins “Please talk to Alberts, but try to stay out of trouble Addams, and you Sinclair, try to keep her under control. By the way, I’m confiscating that shotgun and the stakes, but I’ll return all your other belongings you left at the house in a day or two. Good day.”

Enid gives Wednesday’s hand a squeeze as they sit in Timothy’s office waiting to be called in to see the principal.

“You can go in now Miss Addams” Timothy says putting down his telephone.

“Good Luck, I’ll see you in the quad. Take it easy and don’t push yourself.” Enid tells Wednesday as she rises from her chair. Wednesday just shakes her head and goes into the principal’s office. Principal Alberts is sitting behind his large desk, looking very pleased with himself. Galpin was right about that.

“Miss Addams, it seems that I must thank you for solving the vampire problem that has plagued our school. However, since the government has decreed that the vampire problem does not exist, any thanks to you from the school will be completely unofficial.

Wednesday shrugs and takes a moment to study the papers on his desk.

The reason I was reticent before was that I had engaged the services of a vampire hunter who was going to act as a consultant for the school. Unfortunately, he was unavoidably detained. His name was also Addams, perhaps a relative?”

Wednesday grimaces “It is a possibility, but we are a large and diverse clan.” She has an uncomfortable feeling as to where this conversation is going to go.

Alberts attempts to put on a serious expression. “I’m sorry It was wrong of me to assume that you would be related. His name was Fester Addams, are you related to him?”

Wednesday tries to suppress a smile at the mention of her favorite uncle. “Ah yes, I am familiar with him by reputation. You didn’t pay for his services in advance, did you?”

“Yes, he was most insistent about that. Why?” Alberts looks blankly at her.

Wednesday tries to control her happiness at the principal’s mistake and keep her expression blank. “I’m afraid that you will not see either Fester or your money ever again. I do hope it wasn’t too much.”

Principal Alberts looks confused by Wednesday’s response. “I’m sorry what?”

She smiles at him as she tries to explain the situation. “Your money is gone. Forever. You will never see it again.” The principal looks shocked but does not interrupt. “Fester Addams knows no more about vampires than you or anyone else. He just said what you wanted to hear and took your money.”

“You mean he conned me? I thought you were familiar with his reputation?” Alberts is now very confused.

“I am, his reputation is that of a conman. You did check him out, didn’t you?” Wednesday says smugly now beginning to enjoy herself.

“No, he sounded so reasonable and said that I could trust him.” Alberts shakes his head.

Wednesday snorts out a short laugh. “Con men generally do. You can contact the sheriff, but I would not hold out too much hope of recovering the money.”

Alberts stares at her, his mouth hanging open, no longer seeing her sitting in front of him.

“Thank you for your compliments. I will leave you to your quandary I’m sure the board of governors will understand.” Wednesday gets up and leaves Principal Alberts staring into space.

She closes the door behind her and looks at Timothy, who is staring at an image on his phone. “Don’t disturb him for a while, he has just had some bad news.”

Wednesday walks away feeling happier than she has for days.

###

Yoko and Divina sneak up on Enid while she is sitting out in the Quad waiting for Wednesday, her attention focused on a video playing on her phone. They make her jump when they grab her shoulders.

“I would never have guessed it, but it seems that black suits you Enid.” Divina giggles and laughs louder at Enid’s reaction.

“What?” Enid squeals as she turns to face them.

Yoko sits down next to her “We came over last night to say thank you properly but when Wednesday let us in you were asleep. You looked completely at home in her bed all in black cuddling a pillow.”

Enid blushes a bright red “what?” Wednesday hadn’t said anything about them coming over.

“Don’t worry we won’t tell.” Yoko smirks pulling out her phone to show Div a picture.

“What is that? Let me see.” Enid protests trying to reach for the phone, but Yoko holds it out of reach.

Div sits on the edge of the quad next to Enid and hugs her. “Ignore her she’s being mean. we just want to thank you for setting us free. And to make sure that you are alright. Enid Sinclair - the fearless vampire killer. Yoko is right, you do look cute in black” Div shows her the image on her phone.

Enid groans and tries to hide her face in her hands.

“E chill. You looked very cute. Wednesday said that you had helped her settle in after she was released from the hospital. You look much better for the rest. Take it easy, Enid. Now do you feel up to eating. We are going to pick something up from the kitchen.”

Enid nods happily at the thought of food. “Yes please. I’ll come with you. Where’s Wends?”

“Ah she has a nickname. That is so cute.” Yoko coos ignoring Enid’s ferocious blushing and Div’s slap.

“Now that she is up and about and has been to see the Principal, I think he wants to know what went on so he can take credit for saving the school.” Enid grumbles.

Div adds “He didn’t say anything useful to the school while you were in hospital except that the vampire situation was over and that we could all go back to normal. But everyone ‘knows’ that you and Wednesday killed the vampire. I think that the sheriff is not telling him anything on purpose. Wends, sorry, Wednesday has been in cahoots with him plotting something terrible no doubt.”

Enid giggles but says nothing to contradict Div’s theory and leans back smiling when she spots Wednesday approaching across the quad. “Rain check on the dinner guys.” she now only has eyes for Wednesday and stands up before she walks quickly across the quad to meet her.

Enid meets Wednesday in the middle of the quad next to the fountain. “Everything go OK with Alberts?”

Wednesday smirks “Oh yes, everything is fine. We can ignore him for now, I’ll tell you later.”

“Wends let’s get out of here and back to our room.” Enid says, trying to usher her away from the quad.

Wednesday stops her and stands in front of her and reaches up to put her hands on Enid’s cheeks and pulls her down to kiss her. Enid’s eyes open wide in shock, and she closes them as she returns the kiss, ignoring the shocked gasps and cheers from all five corners of the quad.

Notes:

This is part of an experiment to see if I could maintain a writing schedule for NaNoWriMo (see nanowrimo.org), that is 1667 words a day for 30 days. Yes I could but it is tough. I think I need to put in a lot more planning and organizaiton :-)

Anyway, this story occurs before the events of the last story in this series, so Wednesday and Enid are still at school.
